im having a no start issue after replacment of the head gasket on a 88 accord lxi.
it is getting spark at the plugs, you can hear the fuel pump prime for 2 seconds when key is turnd on.

it ran before, even started and ran with a blown head gasket, which makes me feel like i f'ed something up :(

replaced head gasket, intake gasket, spark plugs and wires.

the timing belt is on correctly.

ignition timing could be off. i did take the distributor out, but it only goes in one way correct? with the number one pistion on tdc on compression stroke i ligned the rotor up with the number one terminal on the cap. is this correct?
should i loosen the bolts and rotate it around to see if it fires?

it seams like its not igniting anything inside the cylinder.

map sensor reads 2.8v on signal wire with no vac.
the coolant temp sensor resistance is 4.36 K ohms - is that in spec?
tps tested fine.

any help would be appreciated,

thanks in advance.

did you put the spark plug leads on the right on the dizzy? have you got the firing order right? (1-3-4-2)

and yeah the dizzy only goes in 1 way

yeah spark plug wires are on right, #1 cyl closest to the timing belt then 234 going towards the dist. and then there numbered on the cap so its kinda hard to mess up.

well i feel totally stupid after saying that, cause guess what... i did have them on wrong for some odd reason, maybe it was because it was 2am when i put them on, who knows. lol

anyways cranks and idles ok, feels peppier that ever. but theres a code for coolant temp sensor. might change that and see what happends. it does try to idle real low before its warmed up and shuts off.

another problem is smoke coming out of the inlet side of the pcv system where it connects to the intake tubing, at first i thought it was just old coolant getting burned up that was still in the oil galleys and whatnot, but after about 10 mins of idle and revving the engine it still does it. i heard that means blown head gasket, but i just changed it? could there be other issues that i don't know about? the pcv valve is new, and all other lines are clear. replaced about every hose on the damn thing.

Try running it a little and then changing the oil again. You prolly had it pretty well flooded before and ll that has to clear out. Dont get to happy with the revs if the oil is laden with gas it doesnt work as well.

well im not happy at all considering it wasn't mine idc, but i did call my cousin whos a honda specialist, he says that the ring lands are cracked or broken, because the engine has overheated, which it has many times my friend said. so basicly the engine is junk, and not worth rebuilding. so i put it all back together smoking out of the valve cover vent an all, hes going to drive it till it quits. ohh well, its just money right?

"HOnda specialists", are rarely the guys who know anything about A20 engines. I would tend to agree with the ring theory if it were and alum block Honda. Sure there are a lot of variables with general engine condition diagnositcs, but since this one ran "fine" before and it is not a high compression job, yeah I would not jump to that conclusion just yet.
There may be a problem with the head, pvc oil separator full of water, still a restricted radiator, or air in the system. It sounds like you have a knowledgeable handle on things but I figured I would add my (distant) perspective.
