View Full Version : Which turbo for my B20a?

How do i decide which turbo to go for with my setup? its a B20a1, im using 9:1 wiseco pistons and having a load of headwork done with bigger valves (if that affects anything). Im aiming for a minimum of 300whp and want something that is going to spool up quickly but not die out too much at high rpms. Money isnt too much of an issue (with in reason )

Any suggestions or tips to help me choose would be much appreciated as this will be the first time i have had anything to do with a turbo setup.

well im not really sure to be honest, i havent really decided how much i want to spend, i was looking for some pointers as to what was best then i could make a decision if i had enough money or not. I can afford a pretty decent one i think. I guess ive got round about $1000 to spend but its quite flexible.

gt3076? My favorite "street turbo"
500whp if you want it..

to turbo any car it would be around 1600-3000+ depending if you get new or used parts...at least you are trying...i would do the obd1 swap first so you can tune your turbo car.

i mean ive got $1000 for the turbo alone, ive got more money for the rest, ive already bought pistons, rods, crank, valves, cam gears etc.

Thanks accordtheory, il look into that turbo. What do you like about it so much?

If you want to budget i would look at a T3 Super 60 it will get you around the 300whp but i was pushing 17psi. Im currently going with either a t3/t4 setup or gonna drop a lot and get the GT3076R but im not sure because with that i will need water lines and a few other parts to run a turbo like that.

For simplicity i would do a T3 to cut costs if your on a budget. But definately do rods you dont have to do everything but rods and pistons are essential.

id go for a T3/T04, at least a .63 stage 3 turbine. The GT3076R is sexy, its just expensive

I agree....I will probably go with a T3/T04 more than likely because its cheaper and my pockets are not as deep as they were the first time i built my b20a.

Plus it will get into the power goals im looking for!

They're usually like $11-1200, maybe less. http://www.full-race.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=214_699&products_id=1128&osCsid=aa4e8daa1e565abd27ae0270115291bb
Running coolant lines to a turbo isn't hard at all, and a water cooled bearing housing is much better than an oil "cooled" housing. Even a lousy book like Maximum Boost gets into this a little, describing how a non watercooled turbo gets hot enough to cause constant damage to the oil. The way I look at it, non water cooled turbos are only appropriate for applications with low egts, (diesels). You'll never see a non watercooled turbo on any modern oem turbo vehicle. A turbo timer attempts to solve part of this problem, but it doesn't change anything when the motor is under load. I guess I'll be running only synthetic in my car, with the non watercooled turbo I have.

thanks bud. Would i need to get the 0.63 turbine housing on that one aswell? And is that place you linked to a good place to get it from as i hear there a a few fakes going round.

Full-race? That company is practically the benchmark for the entire aftermarket turbosystem industry..(and their prices aren't really bad either)

I'd get a bigger housing than the .63, myself.
