View Full Version : i have the solution to the rear lip on the hatchbacks

take a look at this,it's from an olds 88,not sure what year, thats why i took a picture, i'm going to remove the flat center section,it's easy, just cut it off, and when it is the curve of the skirt matches the hatch bumper perfectly. talking about on the flat part on the bottom. they are too long on the ends that go towards the front of the car, this is easy to fix, they are cut off straight from the factory, so all you have to do is trim to length. they ends after cutting off the center section, line up perfectly where the spare tire well sticks down slightly under the bumper. so you end up with a two piece lip. you wil probably just have to trim slightly around the exaust cutout too. pretty easy stuff. it will just bolt up to the flat lip on the hatch bumper bottom after drilling a few holes.

can someone identify the year of this? it's an olds eighty eight i know that.

i have to pull my rear bumper off so i can trim it to match the contour on the end, but holding it up it looks like an extension of the bottom part of the bumper. mine is going to take a lot more trimming on the exaust end,due to the wierd muffler i have on my car,but for a standard muffler i don't think it will be any big deal. i also have that trailer hitch too.

ok i'm doing the difficult part first, the part around the muffler, which on my car is under the bumper edge. i have clamped one side, after lining it up, and drilled the screw holes that will hold it in place, while clamped, this insures it goes back on the same way it came off. it had a lot of excess plastic sticking into the inner bumper,so i trimmed it,then cut reliefs on the back side, this helps it bend eaisier. on the muffler side,it's too long where the muffler is, so i had to cut it off, then i have to fit the finished end back on and make it one piece again.
working on lining up the lip

i'm about to go to napa and get some marson bumper repair compound., i attached the end piece with a piece of aluminum on the back, and counter sunk rivets, so i need to fill the gap and the rivets, then i can spray that piece with high build flex primer and bumper black. then on to the other side which should be much eaisier.

lostforawhile
03-12-2008, 01:41 PM
ok back, this is the nappa brand flex bumper repair kit, it's actually made by marson, once you open the box, but it's sold at nappa. this will repair any kind of holes, rips tears, scratches etc in your plastic bumper covers, and other material of the same type.
the kit,it has a generous amount of compound, plus a spreader, mixing sticks, and some screening material for backing while doing the repairs.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/lostforawhile/S4020311.jpg
this compound is mixed half of repair compound, half of activator
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/lostforawhile/S4020312.jpg
you mix until a consistent blue color
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/lostforawhile/S4020313.jpg
you then apply like body filler,it's best to wait about two hours before sanding

oh i got excited and forgot to ask... how well does that compound work? it looks to do the trick... the reason i ask is because i wanted to fill in the muffler the arch that's on my rear lip of my crx so that i could make my exhaust tip point the ground... kind of a hidden exhaust type thing... so yeah lemme know what you think about it / find out about it and how well it holds up and i might just do it!

I can't really tell what Im looking at there, but are the hatch rear bumpers different than sedans? I thought there was a lip on 88-89 LXi models bumpers already?

For all practical purposes I really don't care for the low dragging bumpers, just because we have a lot of steep driveways around here, some off the main road where you can't take it easy or you will get runn-ded over:wave:
I like the idea of fabricating with the plastics though, the general ideas involving the bonding and durability of these modifications are usefull in many other areas of the car. IMO

lostforawhile
03-15-2008, 04:05 PM
it's nowhere near to the ground, the hatch bumper is way up in the air. none of the hatches came with a built in rear lip, all the bumper covers are the same on the hatches from 86-89. this is actually an 89 lxi hatch cover now. the hatch and sedan rear cover are different from each other. but the steel inner part us the same. the way my muffler is under my bumper the lip is still higher then the muffler itself.

ahhh good to know, hatchy bumpers r for hatchys only, of course I am sure if I had both cars sitting in front of me now I would see the obvious difference aye? The lip should be the same shape though.
Dark CAH I agree somewhat, I would not change to one myself, but I do like the SEI sedans that have them &

ok the old steel bumper is out, what a piece of shit. i forgot how bad it was, this steel bumper was put on the car at some point in the past, the amount of rust on it,doesn't match the rest of the car. the new steel bumper i got is from a southern car also, and it doesn't have any rust. this car has always been in the south from the records i found on it. only minor difference,is the 86 steel part has two pieces that help hold the bumper shape on the bottom, and the 89 has three. this is not a major problem, the plastic pieces on the top where the screws go are the same.

Civic Accord Honda
03-15-2008, 06:25 PM

coupe rear bumper only fits on coupe and hatch rear bumper only fits on hatch and sedan rear bumper only fits sedans lol

son of a bitch i think the hatch rear steel part is different despite what everyone on here says it's almost twice as thick as the hatch steel part

lostforawhile
03-15-2008, 08:13 PM
ok it fits but barely. the steel box section on the sedan bumper is twice as thick as the single box section on the hatch. actually sits up against the sheet metal on the car. i slid it in temporarily to make sure the bolts went through. i will try to pull it and paint it tomorrow, it looks awesome. too dark for pics tonight, but i will get some tomorrow. this really finishes off the rear of the hatch. the splitter looks like something ferrari would have put on it. it def was worth all the hard work.

the dam 88-89 bumper doesn't fit:rocket: so i need to take it all back apart and go back to the junkyard to pull an 86-87 inner steel bumper. the dual cross sections just don't fit. in the picture the ends aren't connected and i haven't painted it yet. was just trying to get an idea what it would look like.

does anyone know for sure that the 86-87 sedan rear bumper will fit the hatch? this is going to be a pain in the ass to go pull another one. the bumper cross section is too thick and won't slide up all the way. so theres a huge gap. someone needs to put this in the sticky section that 88-89 steel bumpers don't fit 86-87 hatches or possibly sedans. there is some misinformation floating around about them

03-16-2008, 04:17 PM
