View Full Version : Other things to replace with half shaft

Hey, I may be picking up an 88 LXi hatch tomorrow that needs a half shaft. Reading the threads here it sounds like removing the shaft requires removal of ball joints and stuff like that. I figure I may as well get new ones, no sense reinstalling old worn components.

What all would be logical to replace while my mechanic has it apart?

brakes? wheel bearings or upper control arm if either are bad

New brake lines wouldn't hurt either.

Drive shafts aren't that difficult to replace. Its not a four hour tear-down to get to them like it would be with a head gasket or tranny. I wouldn't replace anything that doesn't need replacing. The only thing you might consider are the oil seals on the diff. as those can get old and hard and start to seep trans oil.

in my experience, they only get really leaky when the spring pops out of seal in the inside of it. Ive changed axles in under 15 min/side , so its not a huge deal.

yeah, i'd have to say really just check up on various suspension and steering components and see if they actually are that deteriorated. brakes arent a bad idea to check either. i've replaced all of my rubber brake hoses and calipers. as for when i've done cv shafts, not too much has to be replaced usually except cotter pins. but do make sure thing look and feel to be in good shape before you go and replace things because it can get expensive and time consuming. unless you just absoluetly want a new front end.

when i did my axles i replace my lower control arms with ones with poly bushings, new brake lines, new upper control arms, new pads and machined rotors, new tie rod....400 bucks later....still feels like the same car

Thanks for the comments. When my BMW needed suspension work done, I replaced just about everything at once and I actually noticed a huuuge difference in driving it later. If it's not a big deal on the Accord I guess I'll just have my mech replace only iffy looking stuff.

That's what you get for buying German cars. I have one too and can't wait to be rid of the miserable, temperamental money pit.

Hehe. Yup. However, I wouldn't say miserable. I was quite happy with it. I loved that even if I were going 110 on the highway if I put my foot down it still leapt forward, pulled hard all the way to the limiter. I also just loved the way it looked, it was quite a sexy (http://www.nischan.com/crap/bmw-park.jpg) car (http://www.nischan.com/crap/bmw-rear.jpg). But money pit, for sure. I spent about four grand in three months on various things.

Yeah. Can't argue there. My 3gee is more fun though. And it has heart. Woohoo!
