Can 40-45 mpg be achieved with a 5spd in a LXI Accord sedan with the FI 2.0. I'm thinking about swaping out the auto, just want to make sure it's worth it. Thanks for any help!

i have no idea, but if everything was running like it was new, and you coasted a lot and shift at/before 3k then it prob can get at least 40.

I like having a 4 door but with gas prices today I might build a D15Z1 VX CRX if the Accord can't get 40mpg.

That depends, is that what you want in the city or the highway? If the highway, then possibly it can be achieved, city...no way.

i think you will have a lot easier time getting those mileage figures with a vx or hx civic/crx. :)

and do some weight reduction too. id start by removing all the stuff in the trunk, then maybe even go for the p/s system. hell, some even remove the back seat. plus it helps a little for quicker acceleration.

id be amazed if you could get that kinda mileage out of an accord...

Thanks for the replys. I'll probably build a crx once I find a good shell.

...another one bites the dust hey hey

I get around 40 with my DX 5speed carbed (with a crazy choke cycle and fast idle ) I am sure it is not operating at top efficiency. So yeah I would say yes, you would get better MPG....My LX automatic gets 29 all the time no matter how I drive it but it has modifications.

I have the spare removed, back seat and everything in the trunk. If I can achieve 40mpg on highway mileage only, I will keep it. What have some of you spent on the parts for a 5spd conversion if you don't mind me asking. Would it be easier to find a complete car that is junk for all the parts? I'm not going to give up that quick I've only had 3 tanks of gas through it. What is the best trans to use for a FE swap and should any of the internal gears be swapped. Again thanks for any help!

I may have found a complete 89 LX w/ 5spd thats being parted out. What parts do I need from this car?

Found in the how to section. If anyone has anything to add about the info on the different gear ratios it would be a lot of help!

Is there any engine/trans swaps that would yeild better mileage than the FI 2.0 w/5spd. I wouldn't consider it unless it get better than 5 to 10 mpg improvement. The D15Z1 looks like it would be a little under powered, torque would be down 60 to 70 lbs.

you're getting kinda kwazy now....

anyways you should try driving what you have for a while, make sure your overdrive kicks in and stays after 60 mph, it is just like 5th gear. tune up the car, get good 4 wheel alignment, keep the tire pressure right.. you may be surprized what kind of hwy mileage you will get then.

I'm going to relpace the ingnition stuff this week and drive it a month and see what happens. I will be doing th 5spd swap for sure just trying to get the best final drive ratio for FE.

Through all the searching i have done, about two hours, it looks like the carbed 3rd gen has the best gearing for FE with a final drive of 3.866 and 5th gear ratio of .069. If this is not correct or if there is a better option out there could someone let me know. Thanks.

would think with a g/box running a .69:1 fifth gear the economy wouldnt be that great.
alot of the time a shorter e,g .8:1 ratio would achieve better economy
i dont know what the diff and gear ratios are in the honda boxs so cant suggest which ones to use.
but i know that when i did the auto/manual swp in mine, the revs went up about 500 at 60 mph and the economy went up bout 5mpg
its not always better to run tall gaer ratios

The single best way to improve your mpg is to sloooow doooown. You want 40 mpg? Drive 55.

Yes, it can be achieved, but not on a regular basis. I've gotten 40-42 miles/gallon on a few tanks with both my sedan and my hatchback (both FI 5-speeds). They were usually highway miles at higher altitudes hauling at least 400 lb of people and stuff.

No idea what I'm getting. I'm running rich on the Weber 32/36, but I've gone 200 miles before hitting the half way point. I don't know about 40mpg - I'll be happy with 30-35mpg.
