I just got an 88 lx about a month ago (i'm 16, its my first car) and it revs really high in park and neutral. Is there any quick way to fix this? i'm at between 2500-3000 rpm when i start it in the mornings (which is a hassle, because as soon as i get it going, it stalls, then takes me 10 min to start). The weird thing is that if i drive it for an hour or 2 park and neutral are at like 1200. Whats going on?

Do you pump the throttle before starting it? Also, look for vacuum leaks.

While it should be higher when you first start it, once the engine is warm it should normally idle around 750 RPMs when in park or neutral. I can't offer any suggestions for fixing it, but figured I would at least post the norms. Good luck.

yeah, i've never seen it go below 900 rpm. in any situation. or any gear.

Actually 750rpm is to low in neutral. Since he has a carb, his idle should be around 950-1100rpm. When in gear it should drop, hence why the idle is higher.

Oh, I didn't realize he had a carbed, mine's EFI so I just assumed too much I guess. Sorry about that Shenanigans.

Not sure how EFI is, but for a carb I'm almost sure what I said is correct.

Yeah, I just went by what the sticker under the hood of mine said which says, "750 RPM + or - 50 RPM"

yeah dude if you're getting it down to about 900 RPM's you should be fine. My car never gets much lower than that. As long as it idles smooth I'd say you're good.

Sounds like the timing is too advanced.

Check every vacuum line visually, making sure none are cracked or pinched, and if apears fine, check them with a Propane torch, but without the torch ignited. You can also check with ether(starting fluid), but in either case, the car needs to be running.
After the RPM's have dropped to the normal LOW you are experiencing, go around every vacuum line with the torch or ether (NOT BOTH!) and if the rpm's noticibly rise, trace down the vacuum which caused the rise, and fix it.

Let us know your results.

Next time it dies and doesn't start back up, put the gas pedal to the floor and hold it there and try to start it.

sounds like it could be a bad idle control valve or the coolant system may need to be bled.
