I have an 89 4-door DX 5-speed. Lately, it just hasn’t been quite right. I have a very bad knocking sound coming from the bottom of the motor when it has load on it. (If I’m accelerating hard or shift early)

Since this noise has started, if I drive the car above 70 miles an hour I get a violent shudder after about 15 mins of driving. If I let off the throttle for a second, then keep driving at speed, it takes about another 10 to 15 mins before it will shutter again.

I’m so confused.

To give you an idea of the knocking sound I’m talking about. Image a sound very similar to valve knock but coming from the very bottom of the motor.

do a compression test to see if the valve are closing all the way.

Car has 193,000 miles and is on its second tranny. However the second trany came from a junkyard after the first one self destructed. It was only put in about 20,000 miles ago.

At low speeds (below 60MPH) the car is flawless

Usually metallic clanging sounds from the bottom of the engine indicate a bad crankshaft bearing.

Not sure about the shudder.
