have u noticed any dif with the makeshift cai on the carb

oscwrestler
04-12-2008, 02:48 PM
the only dif is that it smell like a boat motor when its warming up so idk what side of the spectrum it is on, lean or rich but i assume lean. oh!!! where the filter goes on there is a little bar to hold it in place in the air box... would it hurt anything to cut it out?

Good on the repairs but is it really that hard to remove 3 nuts and take the valve cover off?

oscwrestler
04-12-2008, 02:56 PM
i tried to today. i couldn't get the thing off. is there any trick to it?

russiankid

Remove the 3 nuts, then there are 3 rubber grommets. Remove those and rock the cover off.

if you get your hands on a non running lx it could be worth it just to do the swap

Next time you go to a junkyard, ask for a 86-89 LXi valve cover. Mine was only $25 and it looks awesome.

The filter is $10 at Shucks and autozone.

Did you notice any difference in the cold air??

For that bracket that supports the air cleaner to the valve cover, there are 2 10mm bolts that hold it to the filter box, and 2 10mm nuts that hold it to the valve cover.

And since you don't have emmisions (at least I hope! Hillsboro is too far away from me, well niether is Cali!! AHH!!) Then you should consider the complete vacuum removal if you expect ANY power from that thing.

oscwrestler
04-13-2008, 12:27 AM
the problem wth the vac removal is im VERY new to working on cars.. i dont wanna mess anything up seein as how this will be my driver again. i actually havent been able to do any real pulls with it. my tags are bad and my insurance is currently suspended because of the wreck i got in. and i do have emissions but as soon as i do it im def taking off the exaust and going with a straight pipe job. i dont even wanna make the headder just straight pipes from the head (if you see any problems let me know so i dont screw anything up) i just took of the bracket olding the box to the valvei hope that wont pose a problem...

UHH!!!!!! Straight out of the head = BIG problems!! I hope I don't have to name all the things wrong, but appart from Johnny Law, it will burn your valves up.

If you are serious, I would just keep the hood closed and do some research on engines in general.

i just didnt wanna look for one to fit it! and that was free except the duct tape... that was 3 bucks... oh!!! is the exaust bolted anywhere past the cat? i dont wanna have to hack off my shit for a new pipe

Bass Man
04-13-2008, 10:01 AM
If you have emmision testing, cut it after the cat and replace it with 2 1/4" tubing. If you don't have testing, cut it after the flexpipe and do 2 1/4", or at least say that to the guy putting it in.

oscwrestler
04-13-2008, 10:29 AM
i have testing but i figure my tags are good for 2 years so it seems worth it to just do straight pipes from the cat until i gotta go back. so there is no way to remove the exaust pipe with bolts?

86ccord
04-13-2008, 11:04 AM

If you want good cheap sound.. do what i did.. i cut my muffler off.. and i still have the stock header, flex pipe, tubing, and cat.. just no muffler and i went to auto zone and got an extention pipe to finish off where i took the muffler off so the exhuast fumes wouldnt come through the car.. and it sounds supa good.. and doesnt sound like a pissed weed wacker either....

did you have to weld anything? thats the only issue for me

Bass Man

I took my muffler off when I got mine as well...
Because of the resonators and the cat, it will still be quiet.

When I took my stock valve cover off, I noticed someone put some Form-a-gasket on the gasket... Just thought I would say that...

Most vavle cover gaskets are reusable, you just have to get the gasket and head CLEAN and oil free when you put it back together or it will leak...

Mine didn't leak the first time, but when I went in to adjust my valves, I didn't do a good job at cleaning the head, so it started leaking profusely... I cleaned it up and now I'm leak-free!

i cut the muffler off of mine when i was going to put on my aftermarket mufller.and with no muffler it was not nearly as loud as it was with the new one.

a genuine honest to goodness noob, I digress.
You have a lot to learn, but I appreciate your inspiration.
Vacuum removal is for (scale of 1 to 10) at least a 7 on the mechanical difficulty experience. From what you say I think you are a 1.5, not meant to be an insult ok.
Your interest and inspiration will carry you towards 10 if you pay attention and think real good before asking questions, READ READ READ
The cold air intake is not really helping you would be my guess, because of the ribbed duct you are using, the air is probably slowing down and picking up heat.

good pictures!

yeah i just took it off and flipped my air cleaner lid. and yeah i'm def not all that skilled yet but i'm determined as hell to get good with these cars. and i've read the stuff on running the stock carb with no emissions and i think that is a good start to doing a full vac removal. i'm pretty sure i'm getting a weber this weekend but i still need to do emissions so it wont go on for a while. so i havee plenty of time to read and learn but the only way to really learn is do it right?

Couldn't have put it better myself.

osc: Be careful with the vac removal, and just make sure you print out the how-to, read it, then read it again, then maybe one more time before actually going through doing it to your car. As for the need for the ECU, honestly I'm not sure. But I know that in our carb'd cars, it's not completely necessary. Hell, when I was putting mine back together after a total gut-job on it, I intentionally didn't have the ECU in and was able to start it right up and take it for a spin around the block (with a milk-crate as a seat lol.). That being said, it's not hurting anything by any means, and weighs less than a pound, so i would keep it in there.

For the weber, roodoo please correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as you jet the weber correctly, and tune it down, you can lean out the mix and should be able to pass emissions if all they do is the exhaust analyzing like they do up here in CT. If they want to see only stock ignition/carburetion then you're screwed.

Bear in mind, there's really no easy 'undo' button for the vac removal or weber install. Sure anything can be done, but it'll take you twice as long to put everything back in compared to the removal.

Good luck, and please please please read as much as you can about things first, then post up any questions you might have. Don't hesitate to PM someone specifically if you think you can get the best answer from them too.

Dad is correct, I threw away a 30 gallon trash can of stuff under the hood I did not need anymore with the weber swap.
That said, you may not want to remove as much as I did if you need emmsisions stickers. And no the computer does not do much anymore once the weber is installed. Weber-iszed, the car is MUCH simpler to deal with.

It took me about 4 hours to remove everything, and about half of that was trying to figure out where the hell the "AC Highrev" plate was for the manuel secondaries.

When did they start doing emmisions in Oregon?! I hope the it doesn't come too far south.

Newbie questions are fine. Sometimes personal Q&A are better than searching. Search... If you don't find something or understand it, PM any of the "Foundation Members", I'm sure any one of them know a 3G front to back. If nothing else, make a thread.
