saw this and was wondering if possibly this could be JDM? or maybe from a prelude? i have not seen an american A series motor with dual side draft carbs. anyone have any ideas?

Yep, looks like the ES1 motor. Maybe an A18. I'm leaning towards ES1 though.

Which one of those has the valve cover (not whole engine) that is slanted and cast alum... I saw one in the JY, very interesting looking valve cover for A or similar engine, it had dual speghetty carbs.

ES1:

A18A1:

Only real differences in the engines themselves is the ES1 is CVCC and has a tiny little 3rd carb in between the two main ones. Cosmetically, you've got the different valve covers, and the A18 says "12 Valve" on the air cleaner instead of the valve cover.

Then of course there was the BT1, which was basically a non-cvcc ES1, and the BT2 which was the early name for the A18.

I'm pretty sure the BT1 could interchange heads with the ES1. And the BT2 can interchange heads with the A18, since they're the same motor. But the BT2/A18 can't swap heads with the BT1/ES1. This was due to slightly changed headbolt locations, IIRC.

It's really hard keeping these motors straight. It's a fucking confusing mix in the Preludes. I'll pretend for the sake of this thread, that the 2g and 3g Accords don't exist and neither do the A20/BS motors.

come on now, you know it is going to be asked what will interchange with them  like A20 head on ET1 block for example:wave:

^^ and whether or not its a direct bolt in for the 3gee!

Hehe, I started writing up all the interchange between cylinder heads and different engines. Taking into account intake port shape and layout. Wish I had access to all those cylinder heads, I'd take pictures and catalog them... Maybe it's time for a new sticky. :)

Any of those motors will drop into the 3g Accord. But you either have to take with it the entire intake and carb system, or do custom carbs.

Though I suppose you could de-vacuum those dual carbs, put the A18 head on the A20 block, and might get a lil power bump. Take the 4-2-1 header off of the 2g Prelude as well and a nice cam, and might have yourself a A20A3 killer. It would be an economical way to put dual sidedrafts on your car for sure. But the weird port spacing on the A18

However, that motor is NOT an A18. That ES1 head won't fit on your A20 block. In fact, if I were you, I'd completely disregard that motor. It doesn't even have the cubes of the A20, and has about the same power and probably a little less torque.

you guys should read a lil of that artical i posted has some good info in it

dual DCOE carbureted ET-2/A18 hybrid. If this rush of letters and numbers has you confused, don't worry. Just think LS/VTEC circa 1985.

The higher flowing USDM A18 head was actually sold by Mugen in Japan as an alternative to the weaksauce CVCC heads available in the United States.

Link to said article or thread?

Edit: I'm an idiot. I didn't see it at all below the image.

Okay WTF. ET2 head is different from the A18? I thought they were the same damn engine with a name change. Same way the BS and A20 are the same!!! Also, the ET1 and ET2 were NOT CVCC, so this article is really confusing. I don't think they have their facts straight. Also, the Prelude Si has a windage tray? Do the rest of the A20A3 motors have a Windage tray? Or do they mean the 3g Prelude Si?

sorry for the off topic, but I have the book with that car featured.. I was like hell yeah.

Yeah, I'd like to snag a copy of that magazine. I'm not really sure what "rare" parts they had in the engine, as there are a bajillion A18/A20/ES/ET motors around. The manifold is rare, but they can be made. It's a typical rjudgey-style build if you ask me. And I think Rich generally does more work than this guy, with the big valve conversion and crazy headwork. He's probably putting down even more horsepower than that guy.

HondaTuning Nov 05,
that Prelude has a rare JDM headlight intake vent, too cool

I have that Honda tuning kicking around somewhere.... I wasn't overly impressed with the lude when I got it, don't get me wrong, it's nice... but I didn't see it as being magazine nice.

That thing is cleaner than most of the stuff I've seen in Honda Tuning. I keep seeing cars in there with shitty carbon fiber hoods, horrible body gaps, clear corners from AutoZone that don't fit properly, shit glued in, hacked up interiors...

I guess we can thank our friends at Primedia for helping Honda guys look like ricers...

 wow, I guess that is the difference in penthouse and hustler.. I like the car next door types myself.. lol
I thought is was one of the best feature cars out of stack of HT mags I got from speedpenguin. Another one was a yellow crx with dual dcoes with a nice story about running down a vette in the desert.
