Cleaning out the AC box need help

What is susposed to go behind this clamp? Taken apart the Evaporator Housing and there was nothing behind this clamp. I guess the material desigrated over time ?

Also can the blower assembly (white) be taken down or are there cable pulls thru the fire wall. I am looking for the cabin filter but I dont think its in this.

3. Can the bottom of the evap. housing come down for cleaning with out taken apart the lines? Im not getting it down much more then an inch. I need to clean it out good so the drain won't stop up.

Your photos make me think I should at least clean the crap off my evaporator. How difficult was it to get the box open far enough to take your photos?

If you cannot get it off your best bet would be to get a vacuum cleaner with a thin adapter.

There's nothing behind that clamp. Our cars don't have cabin filters... unless you count all that crap in your evaporator core. :naughty: The blower assembly pulls out very easily. Just a couple bolts and connectors. The evaporator core, however, is designed to be removed as a unit with the A/C lines removed. You might be able to get it open in the dash, but I'd bet it will be a struggle.

I had to pry pretty hard on the bottom to get that photo. Something in the back is hanging up and wont let that bottom part come off. The evap. really is not as bad as it looks. The picture shows the first 3 coils which are nasty but the rest is really clean I just cant a picture of it.

I'm gonna clean everything I can for sure. I started putting hot water in the pan last night try to flush out some of the junk on the bottom. Between that compressed air, and a shop vac it should be ok.

As far as that clamp there has to be something between it. Its tight all the way but its not clamping anything. There must have been a foam gasket of some sort I'll have to find something to replace it with. Wierd but I would say 25% of the air was not going accross the evap. core with it together like that.

I feel a bit better and not like messing with it after all. My most recent project was taking out the pushbutton climate control panel, disassembling it, and replacing all the LED's. I had the one over "VENT" out on mine so I just replaced all of them.

I've seen few older cars with loose clamps before, they used to have foam or some sort but they're either missing or rotted. Normally I'll replace the clamp with a duct tape lol.

BTW it might just me or is your evap core leaking? It appears oily to me.

Yep, Sealing band is what the book calls it I fixed it up. Not sure about the leak it held all its freon from last year. But i suspect it leaks for the expansion valve. I never changed out those O rings when I went to R134a. DB you are correct it one of those "its working don't fuck with it" type things. Like that flow chart you see floating around as a joke.

Turned out good, really moves alot more air with that together and it sounds so much differant. As far as the cleaning I did what I could but the evaporator core really needs to come out and be cleaned and there's no way without diconnecting it. There's 2-3 clips on the backside I tried to undo but no-way.

heres a shot of the bottom of it. That hose I think takes blower air and blows it on the brushes to keep them cool.

Well the main wire to the fan is looking a little crusty. Contacts are OK but its been hot. I need to get on that at some point.

You got both pics of REC and Fresh mixed up lol. Anyway, when i duct taped and cleaned mine, they really make a difference in air flow.

Why is your resistor rusting? Clogged drain line I guess?

I not sure about the rust its pretty bad really. I have always had a problem with water coming out of the floor vents on long trips with the AC on REC. So I am thinking its coming from that.

Im thinking the duct tape fix might be for me. I still feel some what of an air leak around that clamp but its way better then it was. Plus the sound is so much more pleasant.

Other thing is the evaporator fins are very very fragile. I used a tooth brush to help clean all that fuzz off but it was very easy to bend over the fins.

Your evap housing drain is partially clogged, allowing condensation to flow thru the blower housing resulting in your rust over the blower control coils.

You have to disconnect the evap lines to really clean everything out, but reverse compressed air thru the evap drain line helps.
