Howdy, my name is Mark and I'm new here. Earlier this week, my beater Lincoln Mk VII puked it's power steering. On a Mk VII, the power steering also runs the hydroboost brake system. The car also needed a heater core, struts & shocks, tires and electric window work. I gave $400 for the old gal and she had been a good ride for two years.
I called a buddy in the car business in Lubbock to see what he had cheap. He gave me 1989 Accord LXi that had "issues". The turn signal stalk was broken off, driver's door outside handle broken and the master window panel on the driver's door messed up.

Problem was the car was in Lubbock and I was in Whiteface; 50 miles away. I called around and found a complete column for $100 to rob the headlight/turn signal assembly out of and jumped in the Lincoln after filling the power steering pump. Had to stop twice to top off the power steering.
The plan was to drive the Lincoln over the scales and junk it. Then call my buddy to pick me up and get the Honda. On the way to the scales, I stopped at the junkyard to pay for the column so they'd yank the column. I mentioned to the junkyard I'd be back for it; I had to drive the Lincoln over the scales. He suggested I sell it to him. We got to horse trading and I got everything I needed to make the Honda "whole".............he got the Lincoln. I figure I got $250 worth of parts; the car would have made $150 at the scales ($90/ton). I called my buddy and walked away from the Lincoln.
The Honda drove out well going back to Whiteface (yesterday). Today I put in the headlight/turn signal assembly, fixed the windows and door handle. Even the clock and power moonroof works on the car!!!!!!!!!
So far, ZERO dollars in it!

BTW the car is showing 184k miles on the body. There are paint stick markings on the valve cover indicating a replacement motor which does not smoke, is quiet and smooth. I figure when the turn signal stalk broke, the previous owner traded it off.

There's nuthin' neater than a beater.............I plan on getting it up in shape and just drive the wheels off it. I'm a dinosaur and prefer rides like my '73 Ford long narrow bed. It's got 750+K miles on it, no computer or other junk on it. It's got a hot rod 300 in six cylinder tower of power, Cobra Jet toploader 4 speed with Hurst competition plus shifter..........it's just keeps going and going.
If the Honda grows on me, I'll rebuild it from bumper to bumper and drive it forever.

It's nothing to look at. Bad clearcoat, hail dents............just an old rustfree West Texas work car.

Man that's a fun story. Always love hearing about how people get their cars. That truck sounds sweet! Love old cars and trucks with sixes in 'em. Especially cool that it's beefed up a bit! You should get pics of both your rides, and that engine in your truck!

Nothing barks like a big inch straight six with headers and twice pipes.............I set off car alarms wherever I go.
I'm a computer dummy and don't have a digital camera................I'll have to get with a friend and have him get me some pictures.

BTW, I'm tossing around the idea of scuffing the paint and doing it in purple primer; just for the heck of it.

Some background on the old truck.
Because my God loves me and wants good things for me, I've been clean and sober since August 14th, 1980 ( I'm 59 yo). The truck belonged to a good friend I tried to get sober for about ten years. He got to a point where he could not live with alcohol or without it. About twelve years ago, he committed suicide. I bought the truck from the family at the graveside after carrying his coffin. I am just the custodian of the truck; it will always be "Don's truck". I will never part with it.
It will never get painted (it's an old farm truck). It lives on to remind me; that but for the grace of God, I might have ended up like my good friend, Don. Whenever I turn the key on that old truck, a wave of gratitude overwhelms me......................I don't mind living now that I learned how.

I have had several of those old Ford sixes. The best one was a 300 with forged pistons, 240 head with 3angle valve cut. Man those were the days.

One reason I picked up the Honda is that my "home group" is 50 miles away!
