Well, I just bought a new 2-ton jack tonight (my first jack) and jacked my car up to the jack's full height (13.75") only to find that wasn't high enough to fit my 11.5" jack stands underneath the car. Turns out I didn't think about the height lost due to the slant of the car. My question is, how high do you guys have to jack up your cars to fit your stands under the lift points?

To be honest I do not know. My jack lifts up to 21", but if you need more height just place some wood between the jack and the jacking point.

I'm not sure how well that will work since the jacking point is that hook in the front. I just don't feel like it would be very stable with a block of wood, heck, I didn't think it was very stable to begin with.

my jacks fit under just fine, but if I want to raise the car any higher so that I have extra working room under the car I usually just but 2x4's or 4x4's under the wheels of the jack.

i remember i had to borrow a 3 ton jack because the 2 ton did not lift it up to fit my jackstands also...the front tow hook is strong...i always lift from that place

Unfortunately the proper fix is a bigger jack. I've outgrown my small floor jack and am looking into a big high-lift jack like tire shops use.

i use my hoist lol, if not i just jack it up as high as it goes, sit it on something, then place something under the jack then jack it up higher again. if that made sence

Yeah, I just got back from returning that jack to the store. I'm now trying to find a relatively cheap jack that lifts at least 15". Hopefully I can find something this weekend.

I got a Craftsman jack that is supposed to lift 15". Picked it up for $20 on sale.

I have already outgrown it. You may want something that can lift 3 tons and have a lift height of about 20".

K, I just bought a 2.5 ton jack that can lift 21". That should do it I think.

What is the proper way to set up the jackstands. I know sort of where the lift points are thanks to the shop manual but i'm unsure of how to do it without crushing that thin piece of metal on the rocker panel that sticks straight down. Anyone have any picks of the way their jackstands look holding up the car?

There is a reinforced area almost right behind the mud gaurds. It is not thin, it is thick. You should be able to see it. I place my jacks center on those. I will get a picture for you later on today.

What do you do if that reinforced area is gone? Which it is on mine in one place.

I have the same deal with our Camaro. I end up using the inner frame rails, not the jack points. I know we don't have them, so we have to find something else.

Use the mounting point for the rear crossmember. I've a very strong point, and will easily hold up the car. It's where I jack up my car when I'm just changing one tire.

As you can see just jacking a few inches on the jack pt gets the tire off the ground.

I have my plastic cover off so I like this point here. Nice solid safe place hard for the car to slip off.
