Well guys ive decided to start making a mold out of my custom front bumper as soon as i get the materials and tools i need. If all goes well with the mold i will be able to make duplicates of my bumper for you guys:rockon:. but im also thinking of making another one..not sure what exactly but i was thinking something like this......

PRELIMINARY NEW DESIGN

i dunno. I like the new concept, but IMO i'd rather see it keep the dip in the top of the bumper like you're old one had, and as stock on all hatchies, and 86-87's.

well yeah im planning to keep the top part of the bumper stock with the dip....but below that will me the new design.

i agree with mark , the dip in the middle keeps the "stock" look , if you going to do something like that why not try making something like the mugen from bumper?

I'd buy a bumper like your front one. It's badass. The new design is ok, but I like current setup. I can't figure that fiberglass crap out. plus nooone will sell me some damn foam, lol Keep up good work man

sign me up for one of the 1st prototype. id pay the better part of 450-500 shipped to me if it help you make me one. if the new designs flow with the angle of the gri;ll id prefer that one but since im turbo and the fmic needs space and air the 1st pic looks more feasable. just biuld one and sell it to me

yeah i got the concept from a 3rd gen prelude but i will be building it from scratch and slightly modifiying it to fit the accord better. the only thing is it will eliminate the front bumper signals...and not sure what size rectangle would be best to fit some nice fogs...any suggestions?

make it large enough to house the factory jdm flip tops for those of us that want them one day. that or just keep it as the bottom pic looks and try to get the lower airdams to point towards the brakes

If not for the "dip" you could use bumpers off several other cars anyway.
I like the first one but without so much cow catcher. It will be a fun project regardless of the style though.

is say for the foam mabye try the insulating foam used for the siding from houses , it would be a decent material to make a mold out of

i'd like a more mild body kit, maybe just a really nice lip

I like this last one a lot. I wonder what that would look like with the dip too? (I know, I have a problem with that damn dip, but too bad.)

The only other critique I would have with that would be to lessen the amount the sweep sticks out at the sides. Those orange lights do look great though.

hmmm... also thinking, what if the lowest 'slots' on each side were removed, and the fog holes made a tiny bit taller (maybe come down to about 1/3 or 1/2 the way down the existing slots), then relocate the fogs recessed, and mounted in the top area of the open mouth.

From a functionality standpoint (thinking n/a, thus no need for intercooler), the outside scoops (where the fogs are currently) could be open and ducted to the brakes. An airbox could be fabricated to take all of the air from the 'mouth' and direct it right to the t/b or carb's. ...and with the ultra low front, a lower splitter/undertray could be mounted to meet the inside of the bottom lip which would provide a ton of functionality without looking like a ground scraper. ...a sort of street/road-course hybrid look.

SOLD!

I like it, I like it A LOT! Any chance you can accentuate the open ducts on the outside a little more? ...like something similar to the way you did when the fogs were in there? ...kinda like a recess that makes the transition to the ducting flow better with the bumper lines?

What does everyone else think?

I dunno, I'm a big fan of the 'lude lights. I say keep 'em. They're widely available, and as long as you get the pigtail, they can be easily spliced into the stock wiring without any trouble.

Id like to see a PS of the stock bumper lights to compare to the one above would be great. Im with Mark box it up and send it over. Ill take it. I personally would like the side ducts to be large enough to mount the folding fogs or use as a brake duct as others say kind of a dual purpose I guess. Id say make them up and lets get them going

well right now this project is kinda on hold. i was on my way to go buy a compressor and spray gun..and when i got to the gas station my car started smoking really bad and smelling really bad...turns out the power steering pressure hose that runs over the headers into the pump cracked from too much heat and age...so i ordered up a new one and waiting for it to get here.

I like this style over the fogs in the middle. It looks more flush, rather than fogs just sitting in the middle. After I get my hatchie I will buy one of these after my repairs are done.

Well guys im pretty sure i have everything i need now to get started on this:). After looking and reading all your ideas ive decided to keep the stock bumper lights. As far as the rectangle holes...ill be making it big enough to hopefully fit the jdm fogs for those of you that have them or are planning to get some later on. If someone does have them and would be kind enough to measure them it would really help out:)

the 87-89 jdm fogs (the kind you see in my avatar <--) are about 175-180mm wide & about 60-65mm tall. no idea about the 85-87 jdm ones though (the folding ones) i would guess they are the same width but maybe about 80-85mm tall since they need room to fold

Well i decided to get started today:) Heres a few pics of the progress...im starting off with making a mold out of the top half of the stock bumper with the dip..kind of a practice run to see how things turn out before i start shaping the bottom half out of foam. what your seeing is a few layers of mold release sprayed on to make sure the mold doesnt stick to the original bumper. but turns out ill have to get a gelcoat gun to spray on the gelcoat because the gun i have doesnt work too well for that.

What sort of mold release is that? I've only seen it in form of a wax that needs to be polished on.

And what is it you've filled the bumper support mounting holes with?

yeah i can do that but it will come out with tiny bubbles. spraying it you get better results and its faster:). they sell both liquid mold release and wax...what i do is wax it first then spray on the liquid mold release. The holes were filled with non-hardening reusable clay...never tried it before but hope it works:)

oh she's perrrty. the only suggestions I might make would be to put a very small radius on the inside corners of the ducts under the lights, (just to match the radius on the openings in the bumper where the signals are) and maybe a teeny tiny radius to soften the bottom corners of the open space in the center.

that does look rediculously good though. I know it's early, but any idea what you might charge for one?

way ahead of you:)...thats what i was thinking of doing to match the radius on the bumper openings...thanks for the suggestion though.

about the pricing ill figure that out as soon as i can for you guys:)..i still have to see how much resin, fiberglass, and gelcoat will go into each bumper.

yea I found it on ebay as well. It's PVA mold release right?
I can see that there's also a version of that gelcoat cun with seperated gelcoat and hardener tank. Is that worth getting over yours or is yours sufficient? I'm thinking how sensitive when below 1/4 full it is to being held at a correct angle to avoid it "running dry" thus leaving you with excess gelcoat.
You're using that gun with the mold release as well I take it?

well this kit sits exactly 2 1/4" bellow the stock bumper if that helps. and ill be posting up the exact size of the lower holes for you guys to see if your fogs will actually fit....just send me the sizes of the fogs and ill see what i can do. but for the most part..im trying to finish the mold and make it as perfect as possible for you guys:)

I have thought about this a couple days now. And i think the best solution for me is to just fix the one i got. I called kamanira and it was 450 with it shipped. So im not waisting the money on it.if i cant find a cheaper than 300 bucks il just fix mine somehow.Id like for it to be perfect but i got some ideas goin. Like maybe just throwing some bondo where hte cracks are then sanding it. Then maybe throwing some rubber undercarage messey shiz on it. So then it would hide the inperfection and have like a ruff look to it.

i dont know if it wuld really be in harms way in behind the bumper eh.
you'd want to mesh the openings to stop stones getting at it sure
its far nuff away from the exhaust and motor that it wouldnt catch fire if it happened to break off.

are you going to use a fiber blanket, or just fibers? Curious only because I'm wondering if I could hook you up with a few c/f blankets and resin to make this thing out of 100% c/f to make it more track-able.

Looks damn clean. What's the plan for the lower inside portion of the center section?

hey, just had a thought.... ...if I get you my 626 lip that's already been cut and fitted to my hatch bumper, could you make a one or two-piece mold for a lip for that too? If you're in business for that, I have a few other lips that I have fit on my hatch and coupe over the years that I still have kicking around. ...looks like you might just become self-employed soon enough.

Im using fiberglass matt. is the c/f blankets used the same way?

For the lower inside it will be left empty.

Thats a good idea. Yeah i can probably make a one piece mold out of the lip..i was thinking of also designing a new custom lip for all 3geez for my next project if all goes well.

just a tips..

Dont forget to mold inn two square pieces of plywood, so its sits like a table on its backside. that way the mold wouldnt move while you working on laying gel cote and FG in it.

just a thought :D

yes this is for the 86-87 style bumper lights...i was thinking of picking up a 88-89 bumper from the junkyard and making another mold for those that have the 88-89 style lights. but that will be after this mold is finished.

I can help you out with this one. Depending on the exact look you have with your 88-89 ones, I might be able to replicate it (or get to something you may like equally as much) for you.

twhonza This thread has become a serious nail-biter. I can't wait to load up the pics of the first bumper made. Make sure you mold in a serial number on these so they can go down in 3G history as "one of... ...by Twhonza Fabrications LLC".

I might be willing to help fund the R&D of a c/f version of this if you were interested in learning how to lay c/f too.

id be willing to pay more for a CF version in a 88-89 style. while your at it you might as well complete the biuld with CF fenders, a hood and matching eybrows. You could retire early selling these on ebay. Or at least till those with funds have them.

I just thought about my old 78 civic. I tried for years to find a lamb designs body kit for it. they made them originally 20 miles from my house. I saw the last new kit sell on ebay for 5k and the whole time I just couldnt wait to bid.

These rare one off parts are costly to those who demand greatness. Congrats on the biuld and designs in the future

Thanks:)...ive come up with buisness card that i can fiberglass into the back of eachone...kinda like having my own mark:).

It sounds pretty interesting....im not sure how hard and time consuming it is to lay c/f...but wouldn't hurt to learn..all i know is that you use a clear resin to lay it up...not sure how it would work on a complete bumper though.

only question about that mold is the end of the bumper (where it makes up the wheel well). Will you have that 1" (ish) return on that edge?

Still, looking great. I can't wait to see the first one.

As for the c/f v. f/g argument of weight, in most cases, the weight difference is so little. Actually, I'm interested in the c/f bumper only for strength (I plan on painting it flat black regardless of material).

Food for thought... ...for those that want c/f for looks, or just a minimal added strength, it's very common to see an f/g bumper laminated with one layer of c/f blanket and a few coats of resin to seal it up.

Maybe it is just me or is the dip in the middle up top not in the center? If you look at the distance between the turn signals, the left side has more space between the dip and signal. Also the middle portion seems to be centered but the dip isn't. Anyways looks good, always something to tweak.

schweetness...

...btw, oldskool, nah, I don't think it'll look weird at all with just that bumper and no skirts or rear apron. If you look at most racing circuits (Rolex, Koni Challenge, SCCA, etc), you'll see that damn near every one of the cars has a VERY low front bumper either by way of an add-on to the oem bumper, or an aftermarket one.

Zufer

not to dissagree with you mark... but not all people would say that those race cars don't look goofy. ha ha.

I think it will look fine without skirts i've had several front lips and even the largest looked ok without skirts.

just outta curiosity how much lower does this sit than the oem bumper?

Ok two inches lower isn't too bad. Im gonna build a front lip thats about 4 inches lower than the bumper and had a diffuser tray on it.

Should be doing that in the next couple months. I'll post up some pictures when i do.

But i really like the way this bumper looks and if i was ever thinking of turboing an accord this bumper looks like the way to go for intercooler mounting

That bumper looks awesome man good job.

As for why i sold my hatch. I came across a newer car and felt that it was time for an upgrade. I do miss my hatch though, it was fun to drive and pretty to look at. Its a shame i sold it when i sold it as i had just bought eibach springs for it and gas prices went up.

I got a 1990 celica gts it handles suprisingly well ( better than my 3G :o) and the sound of a twin cam is awesome.

But if i ever get another 3G id love to put on that bumper. Again awesome job
