Not looking to get a new headunit, just want to get some cheap, less-worn out speakers in the car.

I'm thinking these for both the doors & rear deck?

The problem is that the stock HU only puts out like 3 Watts per CH (DX) and 5-7W Per CH (LX/LX-i) so those speakers are going to be way under powered
so for like $100 in speakers if your lucky your going to hear above a whisper lol

While not a great speaker http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3371484
these sound decent and worked fine with my stock HU and were ALOT cheaper.

otherwise upgrade to a better deck and get those nicer speakers

ROFL, No

I just had those speakers and they worked fine with my DX and LX Decks and sounded good with my 1995-98 Prelude CD Deck

Thanks for the input guys! I'm a real audio noob...

With respect to the 5-7w / channel on the stock HU, I'd be looking for the lower end of the RMS power range so the speaker's won't be underpowered (e.g. 2 - 25w as opposed to 6 - 50)?...

just remember that the stock size is a 6 1/2 but i run 5 1/4 eather way you have to cut out the front baskets to accept the larger depth of eather speakers
its really easy to do

I would take Type S's over the speakers I have right now, but top of the line Pioneer vs. Alpine... That would be a match...

back when i had a stock headunit i used to just steal speakers out of other cars at junkyards and such cause the headunits quality allways sucked so you could get the best sound from any speaker. the stock oem pioneer system in the 2.0Si accord goes pretty hard for factory 1985 tho.
i prefer to power my speakers from an amplifier. they just sound 10 times better. head unit outputs seem to be kinda muffled a bit

+1... I sunk $350+ into a all-pioneer system for the RS I had, just couldn't get a good sound out of it, a friend's stock 98 lumina stereo had better clarity and bass.

Extremely poor user interface/menus as well.

here's the reply I got from a crutchfield tech:

If you’re using the factory system to power new speakers, I recommend choosing ones with a higher sensitivity rating as these speakers won't require a ton of power. This specification, also referred to as efficiency, is quoted in decibels (dB). The higher the number, the more efficient the speakers are at turning available power into sound.

Speakers with a sensitivity rating over 90 dB would be just fine for your application. Speakers within 3 dB will have the same output.

any speakers will work with the stock HU.. the 20 year old head unit which only plays am/fm and tapes isn't going to be super crisp sounding so you don't need to waste money on fancy speakers.

i have just some cheapo dual channel 6x9s in the back.. they're not not amazing speakers but combined with my stock eq i can tune them to hit pretty hard and maintain clarity when running the CD player or ipod. if you're not an audiophile you probably won't care which speakers you get as long as they don't sound like total ass

I installed some CDT components in my buddies CRX, along with an Alpine 12" Type R in one of my boxes ran off a Hifonics BX605, and that was a helluva system. I really like CDT's now. And for $100 for an awesome set of Components (Mid-woofer, X-over, tweeter), I could just amagine what their "mid-level" stuff would be like!
