got my rare prelude SI valve cover finally finished and painted, I'm buying it from skater this will fit on the a20 in my 86 . i started off blasting it in glass bead to leave a raw surface, then i polished the raised letters and bars, after this i cleared the entire cover. I also removed the fixed metal breather pipe, and threaded the hole to accept 1/4 npt threads, now i can use AN braided line for the breather. i will be making an aluminum center piece to cover the bolts.

ok heres the bolt cover straight out of the shop. i need to drill and tap 2 1/4-28 threaded holes in the cover, then it will attach with recessed allen head screws. i'll just put a little sealer on the threads to prevent leaks. i also need to route the edges so they are a little bit rounder. i also may just slightly sand them to break the sharp edges and leave them like they are. i didn't have any bar stock wide enough or thick enough to use,so i had some scrap aluminum plate i used. i had to saw it from the plate, them machine one edge square to machine the other edges off of.

and the bolts for the cover go right through the vc on eithier side of the baffle for the breather, it's thick enough to tap for threads. thats the same way the bolts attach to the steel cover. the bracket bolts. if i don't think it's thick enough i'll tig some bungs on the bottom side to thread.

pretty dam cool stuff there, I dig the plate cover that is going to look sweet.

I am trying to remember if the slanted lude cast vc I see at the JY has large letter HONDA raised up like that. It looks good.

That's pretty cool looking! Lots cleaner style than the originals. I wonder why they left that blank space in the fins between where it says HONDA and 12-VALVE. Is there a way to make it look like tey didn't leave that blank space? Maybe JB Weld or bondo built up/shaped and painted to match?

ok tomorrow i go to the engravers to pick up the engraved bar, i may have to strip off the dam clear,i probably need to tig threaded inserts on the front edge to hold my spark plug wire holder, oh well,i'll just polish and reclear it. i have the nice aluminum bar on the old one that holds my wires, but this one doesn't have the brackets.

heres the original bar, i may re engineer this to work better with the lude cover. but it did an excellent job of holding my wires in place over the cover. http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/lostforawhile/S4020212-1.jpg?t=1217823446

does anyone know if the threads on the lude cover are different then the ones on the accord cover? my nice purple anodized aluminum cap will not screw in. I hope to god the threads aren't damaged on the cover. what year were these anyway ? in case i have to get a different cap.

and the new spark plug wire holder,it will attach to the front of the valve cover. bolts that are in there are just to hold the pieces in place for the moment.

did the threads for the studs stick up the same height as the factory cover?
if they stick up too high they might hit my bolt cover, but i can always modify a set to use bolts instead of studs if needed.

hey if anyone has a set of those three studs for the valve cover, the ones that unscrew from the head, off a junk head or something let me know. it would be easy for me to machine offt the stud part and thread them, then i could use socket head screws which are low profile

I would say they were the same height as I did not have any problem tightening it down and being that I am using the original acorn type nuts I would think they would bottom out on the stud if the height were much different.

I probably have an extra set of the studs that thread into the valvetrain and come up through the cover if that is what you are lokking for? Let me check my extra parts tonight and I'll get back with you tommarow.

u can replace the whole stud with a low profile bolt if u want i replaced the center one on my old 3gee with a bolt that matched the size of the stud worked great too

I know I'd buy oneeventually i will get a business loan for some cnc machines and a building with property, but it's tough to start something with the economy in the tank. and it's hard to compete selling items against china with their slave labor force. already have the name trademarked though so someday i might get going. it's hard to do this stuff one piece at a time on old cranky manual machines.

ok those bolts with studs that hold the cover, those aren't bolts for the cam mains are they? the studs stick up way too far for my cover, actually the larger flat part of the bolts stick up through the cover, maby just on early carb cars? so i need to go the route of finding bolts that screw in there, then drilling and tapping them for smaller bolts that will hold on the cover. i can use stainless button head cap screws, they have the lowest profile, and a thinner flat washer. plus i can machine out a 1/8 of an inch where the bolts heads hit on the bottom of the cover. also now my spark plug wires are too short for the holders,i will look at maby some accell universal sets. then i can make them the exact length i need. on top of that,i need to move my fuel pressure regulator back a 1/4 of an inch, the stud on the sender hits the cover. it will all work itself out though. this is the fun of custom stuff, figuring out all the details to make it work.

ok i ended up machining off the studs and drilling and tapping the posts to 1/4-28 thread. the material in those valve cover hold downs is hard as shit. doesn't make much sense for an item that gets torqued to 10 inch pounds. broke two carbide inserts machining them, but it worked. also if you take those out, make sure to put some rtv on the threads before you put them back in,they go into a pressurized oil galley for the cam. i couldn't tighten down the cover all the way,the socket head button screws i got, were a quarter of an inch to long, so tomorrow i have to get some shorter ones. i searched all over town, but no one else carries fine thread hardware. home depot hardware section sucks by the way. I haven't attached the control cables to the cover yet,or the breather, I finally got off my butt and put together my set of universal fit accell wires. another one of projects thats been collecting dust forever. they are pretty easy to do,especially if you have plug wire terminal crimpers, tomorrow i will go get the correct socket head screws and finish putting it together. heres some pictures.

it's on,other then the brackets to hold the cables. i need to move the ground cables because current flowing through the ground and the cover can cause corrosion between the cover and the steel bolts holding it down. not a problem, they can go anywhere on the block. all i needed was 1/2 inch long socket head screws to hold it. i still need to pull the wire seperator to clear it. and put sealant on the bolt threads. but it will al fit. figuring out a trick breather filter right now.
