i have a 1987 accord lxi 5spd. the transmission went out and i have a 1988 accord 5spd (don't know trim model) transmission. The starter is different. the 87 diameter is 2.5" and the hole in the 88 tranmission case is close to 3". I just called Autozone and they have 2 different starters; a Nippondenso and Mitsuba. To make my 88 transmission work, can i just get a different starter to fit? anybody else do this swap to a different starter?

That is actually good info. I thought there was a chance there is a differance. On a possible other note I looked at an 87 LXi 3 door, for sale, and it was a 1 code car meaning it was made stateside not in Japan like mine.
If you think the bolts holes line up then I would look at the distance of the nose of the starter and how far the bendix sticks out. If its the same it prolly would work but I would make sure it does not crash against the flywheel or stays enagaged.
You could take a chance and just buy the correct reman for it. I bought one for my wifes 92 and while it makes some interesting noises its working and has a warranty.

I would think that correct starter matching the 88 trans is what you are going to need.
The only concern is what was on the 88 trans a ND or Mitsuba I just found out that the mitsuba was made for either auto or manual.
So as I think about it the deciding factor will probably be the diameter of the trans opening. As they all matted to a A20 engine.

i have used auto/manual, 86-87/ 88-89,nippo and mitsuba, both on an 88 and an 86 5-speed and never had an issue. could just be lucky tho

So is there any diff between the 2? I can only get the Nippon one and I have a mitsu. there all boxed as Mitsu but they are Nippon style in the box.

Well they do seem to interchange BUT there was a bolt sticking thru the triangle bracket not letting the Nippon starter rotate where it needed to be. I don't think this is a factory length bolt but I had to remove it to get the starter rotated correctly.
