is it the actual manifold that is the 4-2-1 or is it the exaust manifold is 4 then into the downpipe that is 2 then normal pipe 1, ???????

basicly what im asking is the lxi 88-89 down pipe 2 pipes put together, maybe i just misunderstand the whole 4-2-1 thing

The 88-9 LX-i manifold goes 4-2 and the down pipe completes the 2-1.

could i use a 88-9 lxi downpipe with my carb exaust manifold? so it would thn be 4-2-1 ? or do i need all lxi parts

You need from the head back to the cat for the 4-2-1 off an 88-89 FI car. The carb manifold goes 4-1 and has a single downpipe; the FI goes 4-2 in the manifold and 2-1 in the downpipe.

Do you have any idea as to the pipe diameter? Sounds like a lot of work if a Pacesetter or DC will give you a larger flow area. But I'm cheap and figure I might be able to take someone's exhaust of their hands during and upgrade.

The pacesetter is a little bigger then the 88-9 LX-i and I believe that the DC is a little bigger in diamater then the pacesetter, but don't quote me on it. From a junkyard you should be able to get all the parts for the conversion for under $50 (I could get the parts for under $20 localy, but junkyard prices are far from standardized).

Maybe I misunderstood the parts list to include the head as well. From your guestimate, I would say that you have itemized only the manifold and downpipe. Hmmm....give me a can of ceramic paint and I could be looking at an improved exhaust track.
