ok so ive been working on my car for about a month, my alternator went bad and right before it did that i started idling pretty high around 2500 and when i was in gear the car would die at a stoplight (auto tranny). well i replaced the alt and the car idles at like 5500 now. any ideas for troubleshooting?

Check to make sure your throttle cable didn't get pinched anywhere.

and check for major vacuum leaks, ie your brake booster hose or any fat vacuum hoses coming off the intake manifold

well i had vac lines plugged cuz i took off the butterfly and that chilled out the idle but when i put the butterlfy on it freaked out,

what do you mean you took off the butterfly?

the butterfly on the top of the carb. my dad said it would help with my high idle when it started doing it. but when i put it back it got worse

A vacuum leak to or no vacuum connected to the idle controller diaphragm on the throttle cable side of the carb will cause the diaphragm to push on the throttle linkage, raising the idle speed.

Make sure you connect vacuum to that diaphragm but if you don't want vacuum there then unscrew the adjustment screw to lower the idle.

You can see if unscrewing the screw helps... if it does then it's probably a vacuum leak...

also check fast idle unloader...

you plugged the secondary thottle controller or the ac controller? on the opposite side of the carb linkage.

also why did you put the butterfly back on?

i was told it would help lower the idle. and idk which one it is...
its on the front of the carb on the very right side when looking at it from the front

The secondary is the one in the front... you want to keep that hooked up to the venturi vacuum port, the port on the front of the carburetor... do not connect the secondary diaphragm to any intake manifold vacuum port.

It doesn't have to be connected to the "T" fitting... you can connect the secondary diaphragm directly to the carb.

ok i connected it directly to the metal fitting where the t goes to (not on the carb) and it idled down to 2500. i put it in gear and i died though:( ill put it on the venturi port. any ideas why it died? just too much load on it?

ok update i moved the vac lin to the venturi idaphram and it still wont idle. to drive it i have to use the brake as a clutch or it'll die...
