View Full Version : White smoke

Alright so when I happen to make a sharp turn going from fast, to slowing down in the turn, and slamming the gas again, white smoke will form a nice little cloud after the turn, then I smell something (oil pretty sure).. Anyway, any idea why it may be doing this? I have a carburated LX 88', and I think maybe the carb lid being flipped and jumping up real quick may have something to do with it? No idea I'm not a mechanic or anything..

Any ideas would be nice

is it from the exhaust or engine bay?

white smoke? running rich or head gasket.... or vavle stems

Its coming from the exhaust, quick little puff..

could be vavle stems leaking a little like said below,

Usually white smoke = coolant
blue smoke = oil
black smoke = burning rich n bad things.

Sounds like you got ither a leak in the head gasket to the cylender, or i beleve the carburator is cooled? might be leaking in. Not sure if it is though.

Does this happen for both left and right sharp turns? You could have a damaged valve and when you turn sharply, all the oil rushes towards that damaged valve causing the white smoke...

I got a similar problem, i have a damaged valve and white smoke rushes out of the exhaust only when i stay uphill for a period of time, this is because the oil goes towards the back and onto the damaged valve..

3gen accords are known to have this problem so check it out

the inlet manifold is heated by engine coolant
helps with atomising the fuel so it burns more completely and keeps the emissions down.
valve stem seals require removal of the camshaft and unless you have access to specialist tools the cylinder head and the valves aswell.
makes a simple part an pita to replace.
mind you, is perfect time to do a timing belt/tensioners and water pump and you need to replace the head gasket once you take the head off anyway.
kills many birds with one stone

Alright I;m still having this problem and I have access to a free mechanic (assuming I know exactly what the problem is)...

So to go into better detail, I went around a turn today doing double the posted limit, cut it hard to stay in my lane, and as soon as the car downshifts itself (automatic), then I press the gas halfway through the turn to gun it around the turn, dark smoke either blueish or blackish (not white like I thought), comes out of the muffler (for sure the muffler)..

Now I know I have a leaky O-ring on my dist. cap I believe, and oil does leak, but I don't think that would be the prob., I also seem to leak coolant rather slowly... So it could be either one...

Again it is an 88' LX (Carb)..

Oh ya, there is a smell from the engine compartment after it happens (But I can't figure out what exactly it is..) Maybe that will help?

sounds like the head gasket. do a compression test if your head gasket is leaking you will notice lower compression in the cylinder were it is leaking.

Assuming free install, and paying for the part(s), how much would it be to replace the head gasket (I'm pretty sure it's a kit ye?), on my car?

Also would you all recommend a transmission flush, I'm sure it hasn't been done in 20 years, would it make my automatic shift a bit smoother or anything?

round about $50-80, n yes a trans flush does wonders but it can show some new leaks so be prepared to cross that bridge when you do it, but definitely go for it.

Unless it ONLY happens in turns, it could be the accelerator pump. Carburetors pump raw fuel into the throttle bore when the throttle is opened quickly. This could cause a brief rich condition resulting in black or gray smoke from the tailpipe. Try stomping on it on a straight stretch. If there's no smoke, I'm wrong.

Eh... I want to get to the route of this problem, now I found out it happens if I have to slam on the brakes and when I start to accelerate after.. Are we still going with valves? I heard head gaskets cause the oil to look funny, but mine looks perfectly normal, so any more ideas?

Are you loosing brake fluid?

I can't wait to hear what people think of this question.

CzEcHy

Yes, I am losing brake fluid as a matter of fact, quite fast to (I fill it up every 2-3 days now!)

But why would that make white smoke come out of my exhaust <.<?

Because when the rear seal on your master cylinder fails, it fills the brake booster with fluid. When you hit the brakes and release them, vacuum is applied to the booster from the intake manifold. So if there's any fluid in the booster, the engine sucks it up and burns it. Brake fluid produces huge amounts of white smoke.

Since you usually brake before corners, it makes sense in your case. Also the rear seal is a common failure point of the Honda master cylinders.

My god, so when I brake hard around turns then accelerate and/or hit the brakes and accelerate, and I get smoke, it could be the master cylinder? That's the craziest thing I've ever heard but you explained it in a smart way so I'll believe it. So the thing I've needed fixed for so long, will solve a couple of my problems...

Apparently you're supposed to replace the booster too if this happens, but I never do. Last fall when I finally replaced my M/C I used my Mityvac handheld vacuum pump to suction out the fluid from the bottom of the booster. Got almost a full litre of grimy slop out of it. Make sure you at least suck the fluid out of the booster too, or at best change it out. I hear that brake fluid degrades the rubber diaphragm inside, eventually causing failure. Also, if you leave it full, you'll still get smoke.

You can actually check to see if this is actually the problem in about 10 minutes. Just undo the 2 nuts holding the MC to the booster, and gently flex the lines forward enough to be able to see down into the booster. If fluid pours out, or, it's wet inside (may have to use some sort of "dipstick" to check), then you know for sure.

Thanks, but nobody actually knows yet if this is the problem. For now, it's just another suggestion.

Ya but I need a new master cylinder anyway, so it's a suggestion that will actually be the first try.. If it works, kudos to you, the white smoke is so embarrassing it makes my car seem so old lol..

Following up on this, just got the MC replaced, got my mechanic friend to suck a boat load of fluid from the brake booster and so far no white smoke has been seen when braking hard.

Kudos do go to guyhatesmycar, I appreciate the knowledge!
