Well ever since I got the car it's been making a bit of a ticking noise, but I didn't give it much thought... Thought that maybe it was just normal. But lately I feel as if it's gotten a bit louder and it's starting to bother me, so it would be great if someone with trained ears could give me some clue as to what it could be.

(I know, my exhaust is leaking:()

My B20a makes that ticking noise to.

So you're saying it's supposed to do that?

The sound is worse because the exhaust is leaking.

The B20A makes a ticking noise due to it's valvetrain design. Injectors could also make this noise.

Adjust your valves and check if the sound gets better.

I dont recall mine sounding like that. Mine is ticking vaguely but thats just from the rocker arms. I do have a vavle adjustment pending that I cant seem to get started on. Takes forever lol

It sounds like your ticking doesnt begin until the rmps drop below ~1300rpm?

Is your pcv valve making any noise?

I'll take a closer listen to mine when I get to drive it again. And maybe record some video for you to listen at.

I never heard mine making a ticking noise but mine makes a noise from the starter grinding when its first warming up then it stops when you drive it. Here is a vid

Yeah, I don't feel like it's supposed to sound like that either. And I'm not quite sure if it only does it at lower RPMs as the engine sound would drown the ticking even if it did it at higher RPMs.

I'm gonna check if it's coming from the pcv valve, if I find it. ;)

That sounds real nice, I wish mine was as smooth too (apart from the grinding)

Im thinking that it is the valves out of adjustment. I know your outside the U.S but Matco (tool company) makes a nice valve adjustment tool that makes it a lot easier to do the adjustments. Im sure you can also find something similar from another manufacturer or make one. I believe it was a 12mm nut to set the adjustment.

dude that sounds terrible! that isnt the flywheel hitting inside the bellhousing thing is it? Something is getting nicked pretty good when it hits.
some of those housings need a little dressing up inside clearance
If it is the bendix staying pitched out and floating around out there hitting the flywheel teeth then that should be an urgent repair IMO. (edit Im not knocking your ride, just concerned something is getting broke)

Naf's you should do the valve lash adjustment and check your cams end play and lobes for wear. Do you use an oil pressure guage ?

How do I check the cams? Also what would I be looking for when checking the lobes,

And no I don't have an oil pressure gauge.

I just spent some time loking/listening around the engine bay, but didn't get much wiser. As for the pcv valve, how do I check if it's making any noise? If it's about where I think it is, it's kinda behind/underneath everything...

Also put a screwdriver on the injectors and listened to them, one sounded louder than the others but might just be from holding the screwdriver different. But I did notice that the injector clicks were in the same rhythm as the ticking.

But the injectors can't be that loud can they? The ticking noise seems to sound clearer and clearer the farther away from the car I go... At about 10 meters behind the car it sounds louder than the exhaust with a big ass hole in it.

If I have time this weekend I'll pull my valve cover and poke around a bit, I'll get some pics of it up so you guys can judge how it looks.

cams, mainly just inspect the lobes for blueing, grooving, any damage from heat or underoiling. It sounds like a rocker arm adjuster has come loose to be honest with you. It is hitting pretty hard from what I hear thru crappy laptop speakers. Lash adjustment would be my first course of action;.

Sounds like the valves need an adjustment.

Is there a difference between adjusting valves and adjusting valve lash? I'm confused...

I adjusted the valves today, following the directions in the shop manual. At least it didn't get any worse. ;)

Took a video of it running, but my phone decided to crap it up while saving it... Got to get a new one.

Took some pics too, the macro function on my phone turns out to take pretty good pics. :)

That sounds great! So the valve adjustment fixed the problem

2oodoor

it does sound better !! maybe try the adjustment again if you are still concerned. You can try taking it down one size on the feeler guage, sometimes different people have a different feel of how much drag there is supposed to be on the feeler guage.

That's odd, to me it sounds pretty much the same... That ticking sound that bothers me is still there.

But on the other hand I'm happy it didn't get any worse after me poking around in there ;)

My A20 makes the same sound. Like yours it got a little quieter after I adjusted the valves. It's been suggested to me that possibly the sound is a result of a slightly bent or burnt valve or a bad valve guide. Whatever it is doesn't prevent the engine from running just fine (no misfire or anything).

Hmm, yeah might be. Still bothers me tho.

I guess a rebuild would fix it, but don't really have the time or knowledge for it. The knowledge part is fixable (thanks to all you 3geezers :)), but I need the car almost daily. And I guess a rebuild doesn't come for free either.

Got a funny comment on the video...

"thats not a B20a, it looks to me like either a DOHC ZC or a B18a or just a standard 1st gen integra 1.8"
