I did a compression test to day

Cyl#1
Cold 90psi
Hot 90psi
wet 95psi

Cyl#2
cold 169psi
Hot 175psi

Cyl#3
cold 165psi
Hot 185psi

Cyl#4
cold 190psi
Hot 185psi

Do i need to say any more.Time for new pistons.

I'm beginning to believe that you enjoy working on this car more than driving it...

Just kidding. Good luck with the rebuild and hope you get it running quickly.

do i dare say it sounds less reliable than a rotary? :O

I assume you checked those cams you just put in .

It's hell when it's well, but seems to be calling in sick a lot.. lol
just messing with ya..

edit, I just remembered, didnt that one time the gasket blew out the number one side, I have to go back and look at those pictures. I wonder if the block deck across the cylinders should be checked too.

I think your over doing the stock bottom end. I know what your going through although my mishaps were much more expensive i did loose hope after awhile. But needless to say im invested to far to stop so im giving it another go. If i could go back before i busted the $10k limit i would get decent rods, forged pistons, ARP studs and go from there. I went overboard with my valve train and a bunch of other stuff that just blew my budget.

Right now im working on getting a OEM honda head gasket, then i need pistons, EMS, turbo, and finish my new manifold and i should have mine running. As fun as the boost is it definately brought on a rath of stress. But im addicted to turbo's so we shall see what happens in 2009.

Wish you luck!

When the head gasket blow it was at 6000rpms and the water went in the cyl that more likely what killed the piston. I should have pulled out the pistons and checked them before i put the head back on.

did you do a leak down test? doesnt necessarily have to be the piston rings.

I started on my other B20a but it slow going money is tight right now but i am have fun with what i have i will have new piston and rings by this weekend so it will be back running next week.

it's blowing oil out the VC.

Cool i guess its good to experiment on this one then so you know what your doing when your boosting a more expensive build. If it makes you feel better i think im on build #4 my first one was my fault and i washed out the cylinders, second time i think was a boost spike, and the last time race engineering sold me rings that would not hold up to boost. The last one blew oil because of that so i beat it knowing it was coming apart.

wait. .........it's not supposed to do that???

So what pistons you getting?

So what pistons you getting?

Stock PK2-A 9:5:1 for right now i had PK2-B 10:5:1 maybe the step down in compression will help it last a little longer untel i get my other B20a done.

i like totally missed this thread. Im sure it will run better with even compression lol. i think my b20a has a burned valve as i get 190psi on 2 3 and 4 but 125psi on cyl 1

Check your valve lash it may be to tight keeping the valve open just a hair.

This sucks ass i was going my storage today guess what i found the pistons and rods from my other b20a they are PH3Z witch are the same as the PK2B pistons. Now i bought new pistons for no reason i wasted my money for nothing Dam DAM DAM.http://www.3geez.com/forum/images/smilies/rant.gif

sheesh.. How does the cylinder look?

That polished piston looks sweet! now you need a window in your engine so you can see the shiny pistons :p

I replace the pistons i started working on my other B20a it should be done by mid next year.

so all this power and your running a stock bottom end with afftermarket rings? Impressive to say the least. Ive been looking for pistons, rods this whole time just to run a T3. Maybe Ill toss it in like rob says and run it. Sweet man it still looks good.

I did a new compression test to day

Cyl#1
Cold 170-psi
Hot 174-psi

Cyl#2
cold 170-psi
Hot 175-psi

Cyl#3
cold 170-psi
Hot 175-psi

Cyl#4
cold 170-psi
Hot 175-psi

?? bit difficult to see how cyl#1 is doing in that picture ..?

Did you get a proper wastegate in the meantime?

The new numbers look awfully square :)

I say that because its cheaper to mess around with a stock block than a built one. Boosted B20A's have not been around all that long and thus far have been pretty experimental between myself, Adam, and Twoloudnproud. But fortunately for those guys they never blew up a set of $500 pistons not including rings/machine work. I damaged 3 sets of pistons one set was completely my fault when i sandblasted my intake manifold for powder coat and blasting media was stuck in the EGR port and it wiped out my first B20A on start up. My second block starting knocking after a boost spike, and the third had rings not intended for boost but was raceengineerings mistake so my motor blew smoke early on and so i abused it knowing it was coming apart once again.

So with that said im no pro at this but fluke things happen. I think i might have my piston skirts coated this time around because the last two sets scored after boost spikes.

So here are a few pointers:
Don't use 81mm pistons because no one makes rings meant for boost.
Don't boost with a faulty boost controller, wastegate, etc.
Make sure your motor is tuned well.

To date i think the strongest comparable old B20A running high boost and that held up well has been TonyBaker on preludepower. My setup was/is fairly similar to his so im hoping my setup performs/last as well as his this time around.
