i did a tune-up on my friends car he bought. but when he bought it, it barely enuf oil to touch the bottom of the dipstick and now he has a ticking noise in the cylinderhead... what type of engine damage could result from treating your engine this way for months?

Ooo. I know this one! Basically, your cam lobes will go to shite. So will your rings. So will your crank & rod bearings. And your block will get all scored up. So pretty much, you can just throw the whole engine away.

I'm gonna guess this is a newer car with hydraulic lifters. What you are hearing is probably a lifter not getting enough oil pressure to keep from tapping. It might go away. Or you might need new cam lobes, rings and bearings....

Well, I learned the hard way that the oil pump seals on these cars get old and hard and make the engine lose oil pressure. I was 150 miles from home when I got a tappet noise. I knew the valves were adjusted right, so that left a low oil pressure situation. A new engine was cheaper than a tow, so I drove her home. As I said, the cam lobes were destroyed, the rings leaked, the valves leaked and I had rod knock.

It was a really sad end to a stellar engine. The one I have now isn't half what that one was.

i work with both uv these guys and the seller's father gave it 2 him and he said he h8ed it. he knew how low the oil was. he would let trash pile-up in it "monster" cans etc:slap:; both fenders had 2be popped-out bcuz he'd kick-em in. classic condition why we appreciate (did i spell that ri8?) what we work for!

Yeah, it did, God bless it. I probably drove it 400 or so miles before I figured out what was going on. Darn thing ran all rough and had no power, but it kept on going.
