flipped lid run-on

hey. just have a quick q for those with flipped lids. Does your car ever try to keep running after being turned off. [especially during the summer] (engine turns over slowly. kind of staggered like it doesn't know whether to start or stop.) Is this just diesel-like hot air and gas going up w/o spark or some subtle problem that only shows under that condition? [only does it if the lid is flipped and seems to be related to engine temp?]

Can't say my car ever does that. I've had problems with dieseling before due to bad gas (Citgo), and I just solved that problem by running good gas (Shell or Texaco). I've also had that problem from a sticking choke, but just cleaning the carb solved that problem.

hmm. As far as i know the choke is working properly. carb is very clean. maybe bad gas. Its just weird to have the thing keep trying to go with the key out of the ignition. When it happens i just stall it out with the clutch. Other then that the thing works just fine. Very reliable starts, good mileage etc.

Yeah my car was running fine too, I just had the dieseling and it was bothering me. I believe I did a full tune-up as well, just because I know it needed it. I don't remember why or how it went away (I think it was a combination of burning the bad gas out and changing the plugs, oil, all filters, pcv valve, cap & rotor, etc.) but I know bad gas can cause it.

check your timeing, sounds like you might have even jumped a tooth, my car did the same thing when it jumped a tooth.. its hard as hell to crank up and when you try to turn it off it trys to keep running... so check to make sure your timed right

easyest way to stop it dieseling is to make sure the black earth by the thermostat housing is hooked up and theres no blown fuses in your fuse box. i dunno what it does but theres a solenoid on the back of the carb that l;ikes to have power at all times while the ign is on and it seems to make a car run 10 times better lol

If the carb is running a little rich & has some hot carbon deposits in the combustion chamber, it will diesel especially in the summer months.

I'd start with a can of Techron.

Is the RPM too high when the car shuts off? Too high an RPM will cause run on, and so will improper ignition timing.

Opening the lid changes vacuum slightly, which can effect fuel mixture.

Check to make sure nothing from the lid grommets fell into the carb barrels and are possibly holding them open.

Check coolant and properly bleed cooling system to remove air pockets, as the thermovalves run off of coolant.

Check for vacuum leaks.
