new power steering resevoir

since you can't change the filter in the factory resevoir, I deceided to make my own,didn't know what to use,then I ran across this vietnam era canteen in a second hand store. All i need left to do is make the mounting plate for the back,
and weld in the fitting for the breather. I need to locate one of those fillers off of a power steering pump, the fluid inlet pipe, I have an extra pump,but it's the fixed inlet style. the kind I need has the inlet that unbolts from the pump body. If someone has a trashed pump, I could use that inlet piece. I need to take that piece and tig weld on an AN fitting, then my braided line will connect directly to the pump. I used pipe thread inlets on the canteen,so I can use barbed fittings for the moment. later I will go all AN lines. time to clean up the pump area. http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/lostforawhile/S4020061.jpg

dam the pump I have under the house has the fixed fluid inlet, there must be two styles of pump. I know the one I got came from the junkyard and I rebuilt it.

I would use mine, but if I disconnect it right now,fluid will go everywhere.

heres where the breather fitting will go, the tank can't be sealed, since it's not under pressure, the fluid expanding and contracting can create pressure. the pressure has be be vented somewhere.
I have to put four threaded holes on the back plate also,it has to be tig welded on tomorrow.

I thought PS fluid was hydroscopic (ie: it absorbs water from the air). Do you think it's a good idea to have a vent hole?

Do you think it's a good idea to have a vent hole?I thought the honda fluid was synthetic,I'll check into it,I seem to remember the book saying something about vent holes. I know if you overfill the resevoir, when you run the system fluid will come out from under the cap, i'll weld in the fitting and if it turns out to be sealed, i'll just screw in a pipe plug. I also have some AN fitting adaptors with very small orifices in them, just big enough to bleed off pressure.

well I found out for sure the 91 accord is vented, there isn't that much difference between the systems, the fluid can out gas while hot so the gas has to go somewhere. I know you bleed the system with the cap off to get all the excess air out. Thats when you fill the resevoir and turn the wheels back and forth. it does requre some sort of filter,so I will probably use some of those aluminum inline AN filters. They have a fine stainless mesh inside,.and you can take them apart and clean them in solvent. I can just put one in each fluid return line, I;ll just have to be careful to not get dirt into the system while filling.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic but PS fluid is not. Brake fluid is glycol based which means the molecules are polar, like water; making them miscible. PS fluid is oil based which means it's non-polar and immiscible with water.
I was a chemistry nerd in my younger days.

And what's with the TI-99/4A? That's a collectible now.

If you look at the cap for the OEM reservoir you will notice that the "fins" have a slot running up through them. That tells me that the OEM cap allows for some venting. It just gets held in the reservoir by friction so it's not much of a seal, anyway.

C|I know about the TI994a, I paid five dollars for it, I didn't know all the crap for it was still available on the internet. That computer was the first computer I ever owned. The project is on hold until I can find one of those power steering inlets that bolts on with the o ring. I generally never destroy parts I already have, until; I'm sure something will work. I went to the yard,nothing, he says any eighties honda he gets will be crushed immedietly for scrap metal. So i'm shit out of luck on parts from now on.

ok more done, the bracket is mostly done, I can't do any more until I get one of those inlet pipes. I may use mine then get an extra for a backup if needed.

I had to fabricate the bracket that holds it in here at the house, i took another bracket,did some cutting and bending,and a few screws, folded it in half,and made a nice sturdy tank bracket.

ok the hardline near the resevoir is done, i cut off the flares,cut a -6 stainless flare to flare adaptor in half,with a parting tool,and each half is silver soldered on to each line. going to go out later and make AN lines up for it
