View Full Version : Why is it that when I am in 5th gear

There is a RPM proportional whistling noise? It really makes me want to drive my car into a wall. Any ideas? I think I might just need new tranny oil, though I changed it about 8k ago.

The 5th gear is probably going to die soon.

Check your fluid level in the transmission. Thats the first sign of low fluid.

Sweet. I figured. I hope my 5th gear isn't gonna kill itself lol.

Unhooked my deck and amp, still did it. It comes from outside anyway. I thought it was the same for a while.

Can't the 5th gear be changed from outside the tranny?

that sucks. Sooo make sure we're all good in the transmission fluid if something like that comes up.

and when ya change ur trans oil, dont forget that u can add a lil more oil if ya lift the passenger side up real high and keep the driver side on the ground...
if i remember hearing correctly, thats what i do anyways...

i believe so, good thing too since 5th gear is usually the first thing to die apparently

the prob with 5th gear in most trannies is that they are pretty much just tacked on beside reverse.
they are only supported one bearing so the load capacity aint to flash.
its only meant to be a cruising gear so isnt designed to take high loads for long periods of time.( read people who keep trying to get to redline in 5th or insist on staying in fifth up long hills)
mind you ,our trannies are now nearly 25 years old in some cases so wear and tear is allowable

For me, my first sign was the tranny heating up so bad the shifter actually got real hot too lol.

A lot more often than 5th if most of your driving is in town ;)

Yup, you can do it with the tranny still in the car too!

Well, if that is the problem then I guess that is what I will do :)

I remember when I changed my clutch, we put gear oil in the tranny because we (stupidly) forgot to get extra oil/transmission fluid, not thinking that we had to drain the transmission before removing the bell housing. So I had like 90w gear oil in there, and I heard that same whistling sound you hear (when in 5th). So then again, it could be the wrong transmission fluid; I changed my fluid to normal 10w30 motor oil and all of those sounds went away.

You sure you just didn't have an exhaust leak heating your shifter? Mine gets warm.

Honda MTF works better. I've had Honda MTF in my transmission for about 15-20k miles and it shifts great without any issue; the oil also comes out like brand new.
