Here you will see progress of my engine being rebuilt.
Ill upload some pics soon.

Currently i have the following parts ready to assemble:
P30 B16A2 Pistons Arrived Yesterday
Stock PK2 Rods from Accord Blacktop B20A
Rod and crank bearings are paid for and on their way from Japan. All OEM honda matched to crank/rods
block has been plained

I plan to send the block into the engine re-builders for them to assemble, they can hone the bores and change the wrist pin size so the b16 pistons can fit my rods.

The head is stock for now, Im thinking i may get new valve guides and stem seals and do a good valve grind and clean it and that should do. Gold top head of course for Moar Power!

More Later...

I havent got a car to try the dizzy out on. when i finish this motor build, now the shops are all open again i might get some progress but i need to get rings badly. thats what im going to use the rest of the money messy sends me for when he eventually gets the bellhousing. i guess delayed shipping is just something you have to deal with when you post stuff around new years lol

AccordB20A
01-05-2009, 12:39 PM
Nah ive heard some bad things about those gapless rings, ill stick with OEM honda

and yes b16 rings are easy to find but fuck paying $360NZ for the set thats HEAPS from honda and thats with a discount aparently.

thats why ill get one of my friends in the USA to track some down cheaper when messy gets me this monwey....

Hauntd ca3
01-15-2009, 01:17 AM
i think i'd have just let the shop doing the machine work worry bout the bearings.
the last engine i built, i got acl bearings and they lasted well eh.
have used clevite? aswell with out probs.
only seen bearings killed from poor maintainence( infrequent oil changes, low oil level )or extreme over revving which causes flaking.
hope i see neither outta you eh.

Bbbbbbbbbooooooooo!!! Do it yourself, there are only like 20 nuts to tighten and all you have to to is tighten them to spec. It's not that hard!! Building the bottom end is the easiest thing to do ever.

Hang on, hang on. There are two nuts per rod to tighten... so that's 8.

And there are two (can't remember if they're bolts or studded) per main bearing. That's 10.

Can you handle tightening 18 nuts using a torque wrench? If you can swap out an engine, the entire suspension, interior and the whole wiring harness in 3 hours like you always do, I think you can build the bottom end of your engine. :)

AccordB20A
01-16-2009, 03:58 PM
i not going to risk it im afraid ill do it wrong and the engine will run a bearing as soon as i start it up. lol

I won an action for a DP740 B20A head set so thats one less thing i have to buy

the dp740 head gasket set that i won for $20 was all good apart from the damn head gasket was already used!!! fail, the guy refunded my $20 tho and i went and ordered a new head gasket, $58 for that

sad news is i only have $1100NZD saved to do the whole shebang, so if i cheap out here and there dont be suprised

Hauntd ca3
02-07-2009, 01:44 PM
if you have all the bits, $1100 should be heaps

i would get the bottom end balanced tho...just save up some more....my rebuild wont be till next year.

Hauntd ca3
02-08-2009, 03:27 PM
would think you might find a balance might be a waste of time these days.
but since he's changing pistons it could be an idea.
i remember years ago in production car racing, people were balancing and blueprinting nissan motors only to find they gained absolutely nothing cuase they were so good from the factory.
i suspect honda motors would be as good if not better

AccordB20A
02-08-2009, 03:29 PM
need more people to buy JDM parts, but this is the wrong time of year to sell with this recession and all. stock balancing will be all good, dont wanna rev it past seven. if i can assemble the bottom end myself i may be able to shout out for some flash rod/head studs

2ndGenGuy
02-08-2009, 03:55 PM
I'm tellin ya, you can do it. Just follow the FSM procedures to a T and you'll be good to go.

AccordB20A
02-08-2009, 04:15 PM
and pray like hell the clearances all work out otherwise im fucked, i aint going to pay out for more bearings cause the ones i got are too small or whatver.

you give me the advice john and ill consider building the bottom end :)

2ndGenGuy
02-09-2009, 09:53 AM
If your clearances are off, you will know when you Plastigauge the bearings. The book will give you a range of clearances. Then you take the Plastigauge and place it between the crank and bearings. You torque everything to spec, then take it apart and measure how much the Plastigauge squeezed out and that tells you the clearances.

To make you feel more comfortable, you can take the crank to a shop and they can also mic it out and make sure that the crank is within tolerance. Then bring it home and double-check it with the Plastigauge (you should double check their work whenever possible anyways).
