saving up money for a new carburetor.... $260 saved up so far and and im leaving the decision up to you the forum.

the choices are simple but your opinion should be based upon performance, easy to install, cost effective, mpg, and personal preference.

should have the amount next month if im lucky. anyone with personal experience with their new carburetor please share.

thanks for participating.

I voted 38. The reason being you're looking for performance. It's pretty much the same amount of work to install as the 32/36, and the performance is better and tuning is a bit easier since you match the jets on each barrel. MPG is a little lower, but usually only when you mash it.

a little lower as in 1 or 2 mpg or 4-5 mpg

I say 38/38, but have no problems with my 32/36. The 38/38 are to rare on ebay & I couldn't see paying over $300 for new one & end up spending like $400 total after everything is all said & done. If I find one cheap, I'll get a 38 myself.
The carb runs pretty damn good in cold weather IMO. Anyone that still has a stock carb really needs to consider putting a weber on, seriously.

you have to give these very little throttle opening to go, but when you mash it wooooooot . I have one on a tired stock A20 and it still does not bog out, and will pull in fifth gear from 40 mph with no stumble downshifting bog etc. .. amazing little bastard.

I have emissions, and my car passes no problem. All I have to do is take it to the testing station, and lean it way out.

so what year is a car considered classic? and would a 32/36 adapter plate fit with a 38/38?

Yes it will BUT ....

you need to dremel out the opening some to match the larger venturies of the 38. Also, ultimatley you should also cut out the plenum divider in the manifold when using the 38. This is because the oem carb is a two stage primary /secondary type carb as is the 32/36. Where the 38 is a full time two barrel and uses both venturis all the time.

I would guess one thing is, no wasted gas on silly fifteen minute choke cycles and fast idles.

This is probably the cheapest you'll find a 38/38 without finding one elsewhere. $320 & that's not including the adapter & linkage kit which is another $60-$70...

I was assuming you are living with the oem carb and all of it's charactor which includes random fast idle issues. LOL

i have the original stock carb.... and at times the idle kicks up from time to time.... which is annoying. in park idle is between 1200-1500 and in drive 800-1000 at stop.

why was I you were saving for a new carb again?? :stick::lol: me hopes this is a retoracle question.

also nothing wrong with the 32/36 carb either but if I were spending that kind of money on a new one I would get a 38 just because I have found the other ones on junk cars.

That is a VERY good price for a new carb. I would also say go for the 38/38. Unless you drive a LOT of miles the mileage difference won't be that much. And the 38/38 has incredible throttle response.

so what year is a car considered classic?

20 years is classic, 25 years is antique. here in arkansas, once your car is antique you can get a special tag (license plate for all you yankees) for the car and never have to register the car again after the initial antique tag registration. good way to save money and frustration at the DMV. i have seen some big pieces of shit running around with antique tags for this exact reason.

picking back up the zig zags :P bought the carb.... is there a way to convert it to an automatic choke? a friend of mine says he knows how to convert it using the old automatic choke cable from the stock carb....

I voted for the 38, only because I wish I had gone that way to begin with.
Don't get me wrong I love my 32/36. It has been the best money I have spent on the car. I foresaw having issues in the winter and am glad to report I have had NONE! Ran great the other day in 0 degree weather. I get 28mpg in the summer (all city driving - usually less than ten miles at a time) and 24-25mpg in the winter with 3-5 min warmups.

so buying the carb new would i need the rebuild kit? what all do i need to properly install this carb in my car? could i use the linkage from the old carb for the new one or do i have to buy new linkage? and what exactly is the adapter plate?

88Accord-DX

No rebuild kit needed w/ new carb, just a few minor adjustments with idle. The new carb should have some instructions with it. Here is a link you'll need to read over to know how & what is needed to install the carb.

also can i change the manual choke to automatic? what would i have to do to modify the linkage?

mykwikcoupe has an adapter plate for sale in the trading post http://www.3geez.com/forum/sr_classifieds.php?do=ad&id=403
I don't know if it's still available and I believe you'll need to open up the center allittle to be optimal if you went with the 38. As far as the linkage goes check out the weber help sticky at the top of the carb tech page.

You can get the adapter plate & linkage kit from this site. You have to call them, cause they don't list it on their site. http://www.jameng.com/products/index.phtml?section=13

You would have to buy the automatic choke assembly separately & install it. If you want to do the job right, you need to pull the intake off & dremel out the dividing wall. The linkage needs a hole drilled out lower for the cable to operate at the right angle & then modify/dremel the old lever from the old carb. Here is some pics of what you want.

See that last pic, if you look at closely, you will see another hole above where the cable goes through. That is the original hole the bracket comes with. The hole your going to make is the one that the cable is going through in the pic. All your doing is making the cable go straighter...
I think the adapter plate comes with some gaskets. You'll need the weber air breather also, you can get all of it at the link previous listed.
