View Full Version : Snow Damage...

This was NOT my fault. I was driving down a 4 lane road, when all of a sudden an oncoming minivan spun wildly out of control, and was flying straight towards me, half sideways taking up both lanes on my side of the road. She peeled out of a big flock of traffic, so I couldn't go into the oncoming lane to avoid her. She flew out last second, no time to stop whatsoever. If I could have stopped, she would have slid into me anyways. Only choice I had was to dive into the snow bank and try to miss her that way. She came within inches of my car, but didn't hit me. Nobody got hurt, and her van was left completely unscathed. My car didn't suffer any body damage, but it bent the fuck out of my front end when I hit the snow bank. It's going to be a bitch dealing with insurance on this one.

There is enough damage, I'm sure, to total the car, since there is probably a bent framerail. The hood doesn't line up right anymore, so I'm pretty sure the whole front end is tweaked. The whole wheel is pulled back so far, I'm pretty sure it ripped the radius rod out of the crossmember. Or at least bent the shit out of the front crossmember. The control arm is toast, and the strut is bent to shit. The axle got pushed into the rear crossmember, and the wheel is bent, and the trim ring is completely mashed. I'm pretty pissed off.

The snow is no longer fun AT ALL.

I just want her insurance company to fix it. I don't wanna buy it back and fix it myself. I don't want a bunch of money, or want it totaled. I just hope the damage isn't as bad as I think.

thats what happended to the front of my legend... if the cross member bent back u will most likely need a new front clip welded in :( or a really big sledge hammer and weld the cross member in

That blows. A lot of people wrecked their cars out on the ice & snow over the past few weeks.
I used to live a big city & seen places that specialize in straightening out bent frames & such, might be an option if available.

wow, im glad your okay that looks pretty serious, i would say the front end is tweaked like you said. very sad for you having to go through this for what, the third time? i really hope you can get that fixed.

The shop my dad works at has a frame bench. So hopefully the cost to straighten it back out is less than what they will consider totalled.

your lucky your dad works at a shop like that. family hook up

2ndGenGuy

Yeah, I'm going through them simply because I know they'll do good work. I won't really get any hookups or deals out of it or anything, but nice to know my dad will be watching over it.

doesn't your your's have the combination sway bar/locator bar like the old civics? it most likely bent. that would cause the wheel to be pushed back,or if it broke it will cause the wheel to snap backwards.

You are supposed to drive a beater in this weather, where is that maita.. LOL

glad you are okay, I as just thinking that scenerio last night drivng home ..there was a long gradual curve and I really could not see the road. I Had complete trust in oncoming traffic that they would stay in thier lane. If one were to cut from the herd it would be bad.

It looks like it would, but it's actually got the radius rod and separate sway bar. What's funny is that the sway bar is connected to the radius rod instead of the LCA.

lets hope the insurance will cover it and fix it so you can get it back all fixed without having to do any fancy work on it.

Damage look similar to what happened when mine hit a ditch few years ago. Post pics of the frame straightening process if you can. I'm interested to see how its done. I never fixed mine properly, but it drives straight without any problems.

Good luck man.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking, worst case scenario, is I adjust the hood to fit right again, replace the suspension bits, and get it aligned. If all that pans out and it looks fine, and drives fine, then we're A-OK.

I'm sorry to see that, some people just shouldn't be driving, especially in weather like this. Glad you're OK, and I hope the repairs go smoothly.

Shitty, you need to park it for the winter months!

Tell me about it. It was the only car I had that would go in the snow though. My 84 won't go because of the bald 205mm tires, and it's too low to get through any snow. The hatch was perfect because of it's skinny 165s and great ground clearance. It was unstoppable.

As far as updates go, I'm still trying to get in touch with my insurance company. I've been playing phone tag all morning. It's hard when you're at work and you miss the call on your cell phone. The estimator at my dad's shop said that because there was no collision, that I may be SOL as far as getting the other company to pay out. I'm still going to fight for it though. They're lucky I have spare wheels, trim rings, and paint for the wheels, as that will save them a few bucks. They can still pay for labor fixing that though!!! I'll be pissed if they don't pay out.

Yup, that's why I store my car in the winter.

The damage doesn't look too bad from the pictures but it's what's under the body parts that's important.

Well it's going to the shop my dad works at. I know the people there, and I know they will do it right. The suspension is simple, so I know they can handle it. Plus my dad will be keeping an eye on the car. I've got a couple extra wheels and trim rings that I bought, good thing, but I had other plans for them. Other parts should be sourcable either from a wrecking yard or new at NAPA.

I wish I could store my cars for the winter, but they're my daily drivers. If it wasn't the hatch it would have been one of my other cars. We never get snow like this and the hatch was really the best car to drive in these conditions.

X2 on that. Thats the reason why I left my frame as is. Theres always risk of some idiot messing something up.

Update!

The other party's insurance company called. Said they're sending out a "appraiser" to take a look at it, so it sounds like they're going to pay up! Yeah bitches! At least they're not weaseling out completely right off the bat.

You need to pull the "exceptional condition collector" card and make those bastards pay. I mean, you swerved to avoid them, and your clearcoat just blew right off.

Hehe yeah, It will get painted, but not during this repair. It's still at the shop. No word from them yet. It can sit there for the next couple months for all I care. It's inside, in a heated shop, and locked away secure at night. If it's there until summer, that's fine. :)
