View Full Version : Accord may be Taking a new turn this year - Itbs?

Well I will always be considering turboing the accord, but seeing as I still need a good bit of parts and pieces I think Im gonna go the NA route for a while. Ive decided that based on my driving habits and the main uses of the car NA will suit it better in the long run ( for now anyway). As soon as tax returns get done and come I hope to start work on a homeade ITB setup and start my conversion over to OBD1. Ill hopefully pick up a 5 spd parts car to and rebuild one of the engines. Since Im staying NA im probably gonna pick up a cam and do some small tweaks along with all of the tuning that come with itbs. I have a few questions.

1. Longer the runner is better for more torque, shorter for better throttle response - correct or false?
2. Can I put a turn up on the runners and what are the disadvantages? Would the turn affect the itbs in a negative way?

I'd go with fitting an aftermarket ECU will be easier than rewiring for OBD1 and if you get a swish ECU better for programming with your own laptop or PDA if your on a budget than megasquirt covers just about everythign you could dream of at a fraction of the price and comes with an awesome crank fired ignition setup to boot as well!!

As for your ITB's not sure what you mean turn up, from my experience i've tried manifolds with 1.5" runners to 6.5" runners the longer ones don't seem to have a negative effect at all and the shorter ones seem to work well as well, i think maybe the shorter ones work better with high rpm only so if you want good mid and low power than use a long runner like the one i designed recently. Also ally has a tendancy to crack used stainless for the last one which won't crack especially as it's longer this time. If you can run the manifold at the same angle as the engine so the runners go into the head level at 0 degrees.

If you check out some of the stuff that Cygnus has been doing he's using Hayabusa ITB's with modified fittings for 90mm bore spacing and allready has a complete Megasquirt ECU and ignition running on a B18 manifold.

as below
splash out on an aftermarket programmible ecu just fr better tuning.
i think that black top 4age itbs will be the ones to go for.
bout 46mm and the port spacing aint far off spot on for b20a's anyway.
easy way to suss runners
short and fat for top end
long and thin for bottom and midrange
a18a has pics of his attempt with these itbs and they look pretty good

shouldn't really be hard. Just no one on here has the balls to actually get it done...

Yes I am actually gonna be using the Gsxr 750/1000 tbs. :) Using a B16a manifold chopped and getting some short runners welded to the manifold. Gonna follow along the lines of the hmitb page. Im probably gonna end up running a ls obd1 ecu hopefully running chrome or something. This is gonna be a budget budget setup hopefully. Yeah I know what you mean about getting it done. i have yet to see any pictures with a real itb setup mounted on the A20, so hopefully Ill be the first if not one of the first.

I think i have a set of GSXR throttle bodies laying around my house somewhere....not sure why

He means putting a turn on the runners, like pointing them up or down instead of into the firewall. I dont see any adverse effects, other than the loss of flow (which would be minimal)

well theres gotta be a reason why honda done it to our manifolds 20 years ago, unless they just wanted longer runners & not take up so much room

That is exactly why Honda put a turn in the runners. Note that the runners on the B18 intakes are a little shorter (higher revving), and the B16 shorter yet (even higher revving).

I'm currently working on a set of GSX-R 1300 (Hayabusa) TBs for my Prelude. Check it out here...

I'm doing as much as possible to set these up "the right way" for an A20; longer narrower runners with an overall tapered system from inlet to valve in order to gradually increase intake velocity. The runners will be swappable to allow different sizes to be used.

Got one piece of the puzzle. LS intake manifold for $15. It was ported for nos thats what the holes with the nuts in them are, but im gonna be cutting it anyway so doesnt matter.

Short runners are usually used to higher rpm power, long runners for low rpm operation/torque; but obviously a vast generalization of the matter...
