Please take a moment to watch this amazing video. The working 3g motorized antenna was once thought to be extinct but was spotted recently as revealed in this extraordinary clip.

http://s441.photobucket.com/albums/qq132/dr_snooz/th_1eab842c.jpg (http://s441.photobucket.com/albums/qq132/dr_snooz/?action=view&current=1eab842c.pbr)

This outstanding specimen was discovered in the Central Valley of California near Fresno. The videographer, Dr_Snooz, exclaims "I was outside working on the car all day. When I saw it, I ran to grab my camera. Isn't it beautiful?"

The motorized antenna is believed to have evolved in 1986 from the primitive 2g A-pillar antenna. After flourishing for four years, the antenna quickly became extinct, suffering the ravages of car washes, car covers and low-hanging garage doors. Poor maintenance is also believed to have played a major role in its decline. It is unclear at this time if the antenna pictured here is alone or if there are other working antennas in the area. 3g enthusiasts are currently scouring local junkyards looking for more.

Dr_Snooz intends to keep this antenna in its pristine condition for a long, long time.

Ha. Mine still works but the coax cable has a short somewhere so it doesn't pick up any stations. Go figure.

That's my mom. I tried doing the video alone by hooking the switch with my toe, but I was able to frame it much better this way. I think she adds a certain narrative tension. If she weren't there, it'd be a real yawner. This way, you're waiting for something to happen.

I've never had a working motorized antenna. Always halfway out or (on the SE-i) torn off completely. I wound up installing an antenna in the back for my HD tuner and eventually I will shave the front antenna completely.

where's the antenna? i can't believe you have one that works. i need to get my mirrors installed, i don't think theres a video of the mirrors folding anywhere on here. i searched for one of those for a while, but got aggrevated, welded up the hole, and installed XM radio.

japan thought about it so much better when installing an antenna with a booster as a track (simular to the rear window demister lines) on the rear window.
Very for the win and 10 X better reception :):) not that i listen to the radio or anything

If it is structurally sound (ie: hasn't been bent), then just grease it up.

Welcome to the board by the way.

How should I greese it? just put it straight onto the shaft or do I have to Take it all apart. I just got 2 89' ex-i coupes for christmas, one is a parts car cuz its all rusty But the other one is allmost perfect and they are exactly the same to(colour, interior, motor) exept the shity one is a standard.

Clean it while it's all the way up, then put some lubricant on it and retract.

It had a slight bend in the middle of the shaft so small I could hardly see it, I straightend it and sprayed on some white lithiam greese and it works perfect.

I have tried all kinds of things over the years, silicone, dry teflon, oil, and grease. Mine still works, but probably because it has not been cycled that much over the car's life. The ones that go up and down every time you start and shut down the car are the ones that seem to wear out. The best thing I have found is detail spray. Just keep it really clean and it seems to work.

i don't know why you'd want an automatic antenna...i like the ability to hit a switch that allows me to adjust antenna height. i mean, i've got a Jack In the Crack ball on the top of my antenna with no problem with reception. i'd find it annoying to have those automatic antenna, especially when you start up and hear, "...click, click, click, click..."

One of mine works... sort of. I have 2 new honda antennas I got off ebay for $28. Don't really feel motivated to put them on though.

Mine works for the most part. there's a slight bend toward the top, so it doesn't go all the way in.

Be warned that you have to want it pretty bad to get it done. I ended up loosening the fuse box to get a little more working room. I tied two strings to the new mast. One for the antenna wire and one for the plastic extender coil. You have to feed them both evenly through the pillar or the whole thing hangs up. I don't remember how I got the plastic coil back into the motor or the retaining clip, but some eighth order yoga and a lot of swearing are necessary ingredients.

I thought I jinxed myself after posting in this thread, my motor would just click and the antenna wasn't moving for a couple days... turns out it was just frozen. Still going strong after 21 years.
