I was having this problem for quite a while and had initially thought that the dizzy was the culprit. I did a couple of poor mans rebuilds but the problem persisted. (The tach would bounce around erratically- and the car would generally start like crap.) I was digging around in the service manual and discovered there is a specified cranking rpm check on the starter. It states that the rpm should be above 100 rpm. Doesn't mention anything about 1500 to 2500 erratic rpms. To make a long story short I had the dizzy out for the fifth time and decided I would replace the starter for the hell of it. That fixed it. Perfect starts everytime for the last month. I just thought I would post this if anyone was/has been having the same problem.

Now I just need to replace my rack and pinion left piston seals (I'm tired of putting the drip pan under the car every night)!:inout:
