Hi all. I have an 89 LXi automatic with 250k miles on the original transmission. It is slipping and the transmission place I brought it to confirmed that it needs to be rebuilt. Seeing as how the starting price is $1000 I don't want to spend that on such an old car which has other problems as well.

I am looking at picking up a used transmission. What transmissions will work in the LXi? I've read that the 3geez came with 4 speed autos and 5 speed autos. I'd assume that the LXi has the 5 speed. What about the LX? Would an LX transmission from a 87 work in my 89 LXi?

Also how involved is changing out the transmission on these cars? Can it be done on jack stands and is it a 2 man job, or can it be done with just 1 person? I've never messed with a front wheel drive car before. The transmission place I brought it to said they would put in one I brought them for $350. That's not bad but I'd rather do it myself if it's possible.

there are no five speed autos in the 3g
they are a four speed with lock up converter
for a grand you could convert to manual eh which is the better way
unless your to lazy to change gears you self :D

Well it's really my sister's car. I just do all the repairs. ;) She doesn't like manual.

make sure to get an 89 auto if you can. from what i've heard here it's when they straightened out the trannies for this car. the older ones like to blow up in heat.

There is an 87 transmission from an LX on ebay right now. Would that work?

Is there a difference between transmissions from a carbureted engine and a FI engine?

So in other words they are compatible?

they will all be interchangeable, just if your putting a carb box on a efi car or vice versa swap the throttle value cable bracket and use the cable from your car, otherwise you will have issues

only the final gear is different...but it should be fine.

wow $350 for less than 3 hours work. I'd do that all day long for $350 a pop.
