thank you second generation guy for the pan. it's in good shape, once i killed everything in it lol. took three hours in the solvent tank and several in the blaster cabinet, but the paint is almost off. anyway, here's whats getting done on it right now. I have the threaded pcv pickup on, the old one,I cut off the tube, and it has a steel plate welded over it. all they are is a tube at the top of the pan, with a bent over piece of steel to prevent picking up splash. the real baffle is in the box on the back of the engine. the point of doing this pickup is to get rid of the hose that always leaks. http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/lostforawhile/S4020117.jpghttp://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/lostforawhile/S4020118-3.jpghttp://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/lostforawhile/S4020120.jpg
the old pcv tube is on the left, and the new one is on the right, hopefully everything will clear, it's actually a little bit shorter then the original.

I really need to find out how much clearance is between the bottom of the pan and the bottom of the crank throws. going to weld in some of this stainless heavy duty mesh as a baffle, how it works is simple, oil returning to the sump can flow through it easy, but it won't flow a lot of oil at once, as if you were cornering hard, the oil will tend to stay in the lowest area which is the sump. this is a very simple and time tested method of controlling oil. I just need the clearance. http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/lostforawhile/S4020121-1.jpg
I noticed the inside of the pan is painted, bad idea on hondas part. the paint on this one was coming off in sheets. that paint goes right into your oil pump pickup screen. paint on the inside of a pan is a waste, everything is coated in oil, nothing is going to rust. I wonder how many of these cars have paint coming apart in the pan like this.

Noice! Glad to see it put to good use. Beats the hell out of throwing it away. You know some of the A20A3 motors have a windage tray in them... maybe you could use that for part of your project. I guess those clearances I got for you weren't the right ones eh? I dunno how you'd measure inside of the pan like that. Maybe stick a big wad of clay in the bottom and turn your crank around? Probably would just push the clay around and get stuff in your crank.

Probably would just push the clay around and get stuff in your crank.i checked not too long ago,and the link for the guy making windage trays and crank wipers still worked. the windage tray keeps oil from splashing on the crank, the baffles in the pan, control how fast the oil can move from one side to the other. it can drain through the holes to the sump just fine, but a bunch of it can't move through the same holes and slosh to the other side of the pan,all at once. it keeps the oil in the sump during hard manuevers. the holes also break up oil foam.
think if you took a quart of oil and poured it through the perforated mesh,it would pour easy, if you cut the top off that quart and tried to pour it all at once it would have a hard time making it through the holes quickly.

another way of this working is the trap door pan, but it's more complex and works better on circle track cars. basically a trap door keeps all the oil flowing towards the sump. some oil can get around it, but at a slower rate. the mesh baffle is the best for the street. simple and trouble free.

ok more done,i really need to know how much the crank throws and rods extend into the pan at the maxium downward position. i need to trim the baffle to clear. the baffle works by allowing oil to flow freely, but keeps a whole bunch of oil from sloshing out of the sump in cornering. http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/lostforawhile/S4020124-1.jpg
i went ahead and put in the threads for an oil temp sender later. i have a pipe thread plug in there now. http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/lostforawhile/S4020125-2.jpg

Hmm was there still something living in the pan? I thought I got them all out.

Eew. Must have been caked under the jute that they somehow managed to move clear out to the shed.

no of course not,you want a pcv system it keeps your oil clean. i moved the opening, one is blocked off the other is fabricated. i just left the old one since it's not doing anything. i modified the entire pcv system to make it work better, the better it functions, the less crap in your oil. here's the link to the rest of it http://www.3geez.com/forum/showthread.php?t=67446

just for clarification, the factory pcv pickup in the picture is the one with the huge amount of braze around it. the other is the one i made.
