if you don't add fluid ASAP your 5th gear will turn in to neutral2

Added more oil, still a little whine. I have a spare 5th gear sitting in my garage, so I'm not too worried about it now.

How hard is it to change while still in the car? I just put that transmission in there and I don't want to take it out again. Funny thing is I put the right amount of stuff in...Must have been the angle.

Drained and refilled with roughly 2.6 quarts of 10w30. Going to test it out again tonight. If no change, I'm swapping the gears in the morning. Until then!

if ya want, jack the car up really high on the passenger side when ya refill. it helps put a little extra bit in!

Isn't putting too much in bad though? Still have the whine...Changing gears in the morning. Yay...

Got the other gears in there. Didn't even have to take the tire off. That easy. I'll post some pics of the whiny gears later tonight. Those things were kinda ugly.

Here it is. The gears were crazy chewed up, picture doesn't really do it justice. The whole process was incredibly easy though...with my impact gun.

You know, I had the same problem with my Z31's fifth gear whining at highway speeds, come to find out they do that (atleast some.) Then I put some heavy duty CAT 80W transmission oil in the tranny and it never whined again. ; P

Fill to proper level with Honda MTF and you won't have any problems.

Youch! That much? I was thinking more like $100 or something. Anyone know how much a rebuild kit is? I think I want to rebuild my old one so I have a spare.

*EDIT* YOUCH!!! It's over $500 just to replace all of 5th gear including the synchros. I could probably replace all of the bearings for a couple hundred though...not too bad.

Hey. Another new guy here. I found the forum and figured i would join up.I have a 1988 Accord LX and I am having the same problem.....5th gear whine. I want to nip it in the bud before it goes on me. How hard is it to replace, from what i have read in the thread it seems easy, but i am not sure if it is the gear itself or possibly a bearing. I guess i would have to pull the cover off to take a look. Any helpful hints or anything like that I should know about? I would like to do it myself. I step by step guide with pictures would be nice also, is there such a thing? i have found out this is a pretty common problem. A buddy of mine with a 1989 Accord had the same problem, but i guess the ID gears were also gone, So he couln't just swap out 1 gear.

Anyway thanks ony any advice

First, Download the manual, read and follow the directions.

lift the car, drain the transmission, remove the 5th gear cover, take an impact gun and remove the shaft nuts--I think they are 30 mm. Punch out the pin on the shift fork and remove the 5th shift fork. Slide the old gears off. Put the new gears on. Replace the shift fork. Torque the nuts to spec, loosen them slightly, and then re-torque. I used someone on the brake to keep them from moving. Stake the nuts.

Replace the cover, toque the bolts to spec. Add 2.5 qts of new Honda M/T fluid. That should just about do it.

hmmm, that's definitely enlightening about changing the 5th gear.

ya 5th gear is hella simple to fix just make sure you look at it as you take it apart the syncro sleeve has to have the teeth facing towards the gear its possible to put in on backwards. Dr.Snooz you find a syncro kit any cheaper than $100 i got mine from transtar but they came without the little silver spring (dissapointing). someone posted the manual with pictures on here somewhere at least a link to the manual it's an awesome manual has everything you need not sure where it is though

Remember one of the stake nuts is left hand thread!!

I use caltex Delo400 diesel engine oil - its also meant for hydraulic pumps, it does not foam up at all
