So today I decided to take an old, cracked cylinder head casting I had, and DISSECT it! Took it down to my local hardware store and had them put it on the bandsaw. $3.00 later, we had this baby cut into pieces! Like butter!

The pictures are clickable, so if you want to view the full size, click it and then select "All Sizes." The full resolution up to 5MP is available. I shot it in macro mode with a tripod to make sure it came out nice and detailed.

Here's the CVCC intake port and where it leads down to the CVCC chamber. There is actually a little chamber that screws into the chamber in the head itself. That's where the spark plug goes in and ignites the rich mixture. Flames shoot out into the combustion chamber, and ignite the lean mixture in the main combustion chamber.

I'm curious if the chambers in the non-CVCC vesion (the EL) are just filled with metal, or if there is more coolant passage. Probably cooled much better in non-CVCC form. In addition to the non-lean-burning design.

Here's an intake passage.

Here's an exhaust passage. Got right down the middle of the vavle guide on this one!

Here's where I had a chunk of head left over and I just cut it horizontally to see the coolant passage.

So that was pretty cool. Oh the other thing I just remembered what I needed to take a picture of was the valve seats. I had a couple that popped out, and you could really see how they looked and pressed in.

cool, where did you take it?
I have an EFI intake manifold I want to disect like that or cut the runners off for futrue use as a multi carb setup maybe.

It was a a local hardware store in town. They sell lots of steel stock, and cut the stock I bought with that bandsaw. I figured if it could cut through that hardened steel, it could cut through that aluminum no problem. They had a big ass pipe threader too. I didn't know what it was, but i thought it looked like a big giant die. :) It's called Olympia Supply, but maybe you could look up your local True Value since I think that's what they are.

After your done with it, you can drive them valve guides out & pull them studs, take it to a metal recycler & get about $15-$20, maybe a little more.

the non cvcc heads are totally different, they don't have the prechamber period. they are also cross flow instead of the siamesed garbage.

the design was terrible because of the exaust and intake being together,i don't care if there were ten heat shields in there, all that exaust heat gets transfered right into your intake runners.

Most of the non-CVCC heads were the same. I had one rebuilt some time ago (but I got the wrong year). It was still counterflow. The crossflow heads are like the 1200 and 1300s. Those were definitely not CVCC though, so yes you're right on that part. When you do most of the hybrid motors like the EK/EL, or something similar with the 1500s and 1600s the heads are still counterflow.

I think that the real killer of the counteflow design is the way they have to stack the runners inside the head. The angles of the exhaust runners look like they bend nearly 90 degrees as they flow straight and then bend at the valve.

Man that is seriously cool! That tiny CVCC intake port is cute lol

there was a cross flow 1500 head sold outside of the US in the eighties on some of the civics,we used to put them on the race cars. they are probably all tin cans now sadly. there was a lot of stuff for these cars in the day that is probably all lost to time now.

those cross flow heads were popular when the cvcc first came out, because people hated the crap, we got them from a canadian distributor, there was a market then because if you wanted to add power thats what you had to do. there used to be headers made for it and intake manifolds that fit webbers. i remember a lot of people back in the day had them.. the sad thing is since the cars were so unpopular in the decades past the eighties, most of that stuff got crushed up with the cars, there was no real incentive to save it. :dunno:

I've got a header, I dunno if you've seen the thread or not. AT Engineering was a big aftermarket company, they made the Weber intakes and the headers, I was lucky enough to score an unused 4-1 header, which is pretty badass. I'd love to find one of their Weber intakes now though, so hard to find!!!

I didn't know about the crossflow head for the 1500s, pretty sweet, I would love if it fit on the 1751s as well. :)

shit, i think we've got maybe 15+ 3geez at the local junk yard in Nampa...it's nice since typically most cosmetic stuff is left behind, and not in too horrible of condition. but once myself and the alias, "turabaka" found a seat that had been, "tagged" with spray paint from some hooligan. we lol'd...

There are 95 3geez at the 3 local pull a part yards that are within 2 hours driving distance of me. Yes, ninety-five of them. They will all be crushed within 3 months, and another 70-100 brought in, along with the other 2,000+ cars at each yard.

Nice dissection. It helps me with the porting work i am doing in my non CVCC head (non crossflow by the way).
