View Full Version : Rattle ?

Just did the timing belt with valve adjustment, upper control arms, oil pump. Road test reveals a rattle noise on acceleration. No rattle at full open throttle.

I'm adjusting the timing this evening and going to go ahead and change the water pump and then will road test again.

Use to have a 88 escort that when the water pump needed changing it would rattle in the same manner.

Let the opinions start, I appreciate it.

this could be totally unrelated but i get a very odd rattle around 2.5k - 3k rpm that only started once I put my dc header on.. it's not the header hitting anything but yet i dunno wtf it is. pico couldn't find it either. had all my pumps replaced when i bought the car a year or two ago.

I actually have the same thing Frantik. I don't remember what I did, but I changed the spark plugs, coil, wires, timing belt, advance diaphragm, and readjusted the timing and it all went away.

I've also got this one heavier accel. It sounds like its coming from the alt. or pulley. It started after I had my timing belt and water pump redone ( under 1k ago)

I experienced something similar after my rebuild when it started getting warmer out. It would go away with higher octane fuel and was completly solved after I went obd1. My guess is the advance went in the dizzy, like on my other car. Check base and advance timing.

yeah on my coupe i get hesitation....i already run pump 91 gas on it. i think its the vacuum advance because it goes away at 3k up to redline

GONE! The rattle is completely gone, she's pulling like she normally did. Timed right at 15degrees.

Actually broke traction from a stop sign unintentionally.

Just for a heads up, when you put the timing belt on it will pull the crank off TDC slightly (like about a half tooth) But when you release the tensioner it will pull the crank back into TDC.

Everything is A-OKAY.

Definitely a best practice to check TDC on both the camshaft pulley and flywheel after setting the belt and before bolting everything back together.

I only know this because I've screwed it up myself.

and you should also readjust the t/belt tensioner after the break in period when replacing the belt.
off topic:
when did you move to San Diego nswst8?

Theres a break in period? I put on 12k miles since I changed the belt and haven't messed with it.

I didnt think that either till a friend of mine was telling me that belt will stretch a bit not alot to make a difference in throwing off the timing, but that it would make good practice to re-adjust the tensioner.
