alright...so I've changed the fuel filter, plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, and the air filter. still getting around 20-22 mpg......mostly on the highway miles. wtf? 87 lxi fuel injected 4 speed auto. help! car is not bogging down...little slow off the start but thats about it

did you change the oxygen sensors? that helped my car a TON!

Also, does your exhaust smell like rotten eggs, could be a cat issue.

adjust your tranny cable. its almost like a manual..if theres slack AT ALL it wont shift right and youll lose fuel alot faster.

wouldn't an o2 sensor throw up an ecu fault? the tranny doesn't seem to be shifting late.....moderate acceleration has me in 4th around 45-50 or so

just do it.

Only if its completely failed. I was making 20 mpg consistently for months, couldnt figure out what was wrong, replaced the o2 sensors and next tank i got 30.

i appreciate the help then...how hard are they to replace? i know the one is down there near the radiator right? is the other one near the cat?

actually their both in the exhaust manifold. Pretty simple process actually.

are the sensors the same? as in can i use the same sensor for both of them? i'm asking cause autozone has only one listed

and now i drove about 20 miles down the road.....and my car acts like it doesn't want to idle. it'll drop down to like 150-200 and then jump back up. I checked where i recently put in a new fuel filter....it's not leaking or anything and I know its on correctly.....i'm at a loss....it seems like i'm hearing a hissing noise in the engine bay while the car is running....I guess I'll wait til it cools down and check vacuum hoses. I replaced the filter 2 days ago and unplugged two of them on one end to get to the filter better.

since u have an 87 u only have 1 o2 sensor and its on the manifold unlike the 88-89 which has 2
and there very easy to change just rent a 02 sensor tool from autozone when u buy the new one , and put anti seize on the threads

ok you got an 87 so you only have 1 o2 sensor.. now the idling problem.. does it throw a code? when mine would idle around 200 rpm then shoot up to about 1k repeatedly.. my ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) sensor went out.. replaced that and it was amazing how the car acted after.. better mpg.. more power.. but its kinda expensive so be sure its that sensor before you buy it..

i replaced that sensor when i first got the car....turns out i had unhooked vacuum hose 18 when i was changing the fuel filter and forgot to hook it back up so we're good to go now
