Speedbreak on my Accord....WTF?

So...I finally got to drive my 1989 Accord LX-i today!! It was a BLAST...but there seems to be a speedbreaker on it that I did not know about. So I had driven it for around 20 miles, and had got up to around 65ish..and then I decided it was time to get on the interstate and floor the sucker...well I floor it in the merging lane and scoot on over to the right lane...and I'm watching the speedometer...65..75..85..99..99..99...WTF it won't go over 99! So...how do we take the damn thing off? I think it is limiting my acceleration also.

I'm pretty sure none of the accords came with speed governors. Maybe I'm wrong on that one though.

nope there no speed block i took my ol accord to 125.. lol time for a tune up man!!

ngk v power plugs
ngk plug wires
new cap and rotor
fuel filter
oil filter/ oil
coolant flush etc

btw is it a 5speed or auto?

distributor cap and ignition rotor.

distributer cap is the black plastic thing that the spark plug wires connect too and the rotor is a plastic peace in side that contacts it.. all u need is a philps scerw driver to change that.. and u can get ngk wires online ask granitelxi were he got his from.. and u can get the ngk plugs for $1.99 each at vatozone

I'm pretty sure this is the same across the country. Autozone is changing the brand on the oil change special on Thursday. So we're switching from pennzoil being on sale to Castrol. So, if you'd rather run Castrol, which is my personal favorite, wait until thursday to buy your oil change.

It's called a horsepower limit and crappy 4-speed gear ratios.

wow lol some good stuff in here. theres no governor on it, its "just slow" they can go faster but it takes work wich if you dont know what a cap/rotor is then well... you have a long way to go. my old lx (auto) hit 123 ish with every bolt on out there slight downhill, wind behind me and a reallllly long road LOL

I've had the auto up to 120 with I/H/E. That's with a fully upgraded suspension of course, but stupid none the less.

We've all had to start somewhere. A good tune up, including cap, rotor, spark plug wires, air filter, etc is a good start to getting a good feel for the car. I remember those days.

might think about a compression check just outta curiosity old age and wear can possibly lower it over time. it must be an automatic thing i've had my 86 lxi at 130 on the interstate once 135 going down a big hill :rolleyes: :nervous:

i had my 89 lxi with the 4 speed auto and k and n filter at 120 on the highway before it wouldn't go faster

the first time i floored mine it went up to 90 and stopped i was like wtf and my 2 homies were laughing so i just stayed doing 90 for a sec then i finally started to climb all the way up to 120 and i slowed down and was happy lol

the auto's suck a lot of power,remember you are running a hydraulic pump inside of them,plus they aren't nearly as efficient at transfering power as a five speed.

yah trick ya kno we got 16 vtaks in there? but they only work if you put vtaks fulid in. i remember the first time taking mine up to 282 mphs but my ecu got a trojen virus and wouldent let it go any faster (N)

I haven't tried going faster than 110 ever in my accord. But that was stock, carb, auto, flat land and no wind behind my back. It got up there fairly quick for being a 98hp car. My sister owned the car before me said she went 120 and i believe her, these cars are definitely capable of a top speed of at least 120 as long as everything is working fine.

I'd say you just need a tune up or you were trying to drive with the lights up, hah

The speed limiter is called A20A1... Sorry to say it but these cars really were not ment for speed.

Well, you said it was an 89 LX-i, that should have come with the 120 HP A20A4 in it, so yeah, i'll have to go with the others and say a good tune up and fluids flush is in order...

- Spark Plug Wires
- Spark Plugs
- Distributor Cap & Rotor
- Oil & Filter
- Transmission Fluid Flush
- Air Filter
- PCV Valve Check
- Timing Belt Check / replacement
- Make sure your emissions box (Big black box on the passenger side with all the hoses coming out of it) isn't blocked
- Make sure you don't have any Vacuum leaks, that'll kill performance
- Make sure your timing is ok

That should do it for basic / extended maintenance...

I was trying to find my Speedbreak but my Tranny ended up losing 5th while I was flying down the highway. :uh: I thought I completely lost my Tranny i was in the middle of nowhere when that happened. Oh and by the way i have a 3rd Gen EFI A20A with like 230,xxx on it.

if you can't find the speed break in 4th gear then it doesn't exist. I remember at the Portland meet when they were doing dyno pulls with my car it buried the speedo in 4th, and still had 2k to go on the tach.

you dont have a governor per say BUT you do have a old engine with a fucked trans (from the sound of it) not to mention the engine is a A20 wich has very limited aftermarket.... so in reality you do not have options for unlimited power. have a nice day lol

Thanks for the nice day Labeledsk9r, lol. yes I do Have the A20A4 Block, but I have found abunch of aftermarket stuff that can fit my engine.
