ok some more small stuff done, this eventually will be the new dash, needs work and painting of course, right now making a few of the pieces that go in it,and building the harness for it,
radio isn't in the dash,so i used a mirror control from a civic, and some fitting, to get it where the lighter plug was, this switch controls eight radio functions, and then the mode switch is the push button where the ashtray used to be. http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/lostforawhile/S4020354-2.jpg
the radio blankout plate has the fuel pressure gauge and the choke knob
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/lostforawhile/S4020358-1.jpg
the piece where the ashtray goes is for the illumination for the center console, has three leds in the bottom of it, and the radio mode button in the front. this is that part

when i get to the point of taking the dash all apart,i will be giving away the button assembly if someone needs it

the left corner of the soft part of the dash is damaged, and the defrost vents near the window are broken, I was going to paint my dash black anyway, or dye it actually, and since i have this one i'll do all the work to it and then swap it in. i'm putting my slider heat controls in, the main thing i wanted this for was the dash itself,it's in really nice shape. they come apart as far as the soft part and the hard plastic, different techniques for changing the color on each, Vht has special primer just for the soft part of the plastic. have had this up in my loft for a while, found it and pulled it out of an accord at the yard, didn't have the cash, so i tossed it in a junk mobile home, went back six months later and got it.

ok more done, this is the piece that fits up under where the ashtray was, this is now going to hold the speaker for the voice warning system. I used the top piece of the old ashtray mounting bracket, cut it off, and added a center section and bottom section. the bottom section will be drilled for the bolts that hold on the dash, just haven't drilled it yet. David Maule did the small bent section at the bottom, I was going to make it myself, but before i could even measure the bolt hole centers,he already had cut it and bent it.

this is the piece that fits in there, I spot welded the three pieces together

the speaker is a 1970's era midland external CB speaker, very well built speaker and very clear for this kind of use.
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/lostforawhile/S4020366-1.jpg
speaker holes laid out and center drilled, the holes were laid out with a caliper and a straight edge

this is how it will sit under the dash

are those enough holes for the speaker cone to move, I notice even the slightest obstuction will blow speakers, even my leg in front of door speakers... lol no sh*t

oh it will be fine, they used to put speakers up in dashes with less holes then this for years,it's just an instrument speaker for voice.

made some brackets today to add some of the modules up behind the dash. used the existing dash framework and added to it.
the control module and relay for the power folding mirrors

Are they from a sedan? because those wont fit the hatch. If they are sedan you would have to swap the guts from the mirrors into your hatch mirrors. Well basically just swap out the base. I'm not even sure they made folding mirrors for anything but the sedan.

do the folding mirrors fit us sedans? the only minor issue i had with the sedan mirrors on the hatch was the misalignment of one bolt hole, which was an easy fix.

Try to compare the base of a hatch/coupe mirror with the base of a sedan mirror and you will know what I mean.

I didnt know it was possible to make sedan mirrors fit the hatch though. I think you must have some gaps between the window trim and the mirror base?

I wonder if the doors are a little different there? I know my dx door is only 86- and half of 87, after then they go to a totally different door that won't even fit my car.

it's getting there had to add an arm to the bell crank for the cable that connects to the choke knob itself, working on that now, once everything fits,i'll take it all apart, paint the dash, and swap dashes, had to pick a starting point to get started again, been stalled on this for 2 and a half years, i've been building stuff, but haven't gotten out there and worked on it. been out there the last week or so again getting back into it, had to clean the car good and start back up again.

i must say... this is very cool....
the very esoteric value of complex switches and whatnot seriously gets me off...
especially creating things like this and making them look stock.

but what the hell is this 'voice warning system'? is it gonna yell 'get the fuck outta my car thief!'?

I must know!

it's from an early z, it tells you the doors are open, headlights are on, brake is on, fuel is low, etc, i had a hard time finding one that worked and it's a womans voice

She says things like, "Your door is a jar." Even though you know it's still a door, you're tempted to believe her.

Where is the radio praytell?

Ive done a similar thing making a blanking plate for a stereo din panel on my skyline, and put a boost guage in there. First thing i discovered its surpisingly very difficult to find a flat piece of rigid black plastic lol.

I also found that glueing the blanking plate to the actual dash with a hot glue gun is good until u have a very hot day and it just melts, so i wound up making a bracket that holds it where the stero would go. Then i used this nice black foam stuff on the face of the blanking plate, makes for a good effect!

my radio faceplate is mounted to the dash, I can't remember the name of the adapter but you program it with the remote, i have the radio controls in the center console
