haven't used it. sounds funny though i'm leary of anything thats sold as a universal replacement for all types of "xxxxxxx" I think i'd rather have mine re-charged with r-12 (shop near me still does it) might be a little expensive but the thing only takes like what 2 pounds maybe? i dunno but my 86 lxi is still charged with r-12 23 years later and works great :cool:

There is some freon on the market that is compatible with R-12, it's called FREEZE 12. Napa auto part stores have it, not sure with others.

yes i've heard the same thing propane will actually work in your A/C system..... Now if you get into an accident and rupture an A/C line and it ignites all the way back into your dashboard..... not good :beat::beat::beat:

I didn;t read the link but I think thats a propane /oil mix like from Canada.

I have used Freeze 12 on an old Dodge r12 system and will again if I ever find the hose for it I lost.

I did some research on the stuff a while ago. TEchnically speaking they should work OK because hydrocarbons (and ammonia) have been used in industrial refrigeration since the very beginning (mid-19th century).
In some parts of the world hydrocarbons are used in domestic refrigerators (don't quote me but I think that this is the case in the EU also). I recall reading that Australia had approved the use of hydrocarbons but I'd better ask australian guys in the forum
On the other hand, hydrocarbon refrigerants are not approved by EPA to be used on automobiles in the U.S.

As for substitutes, Freeze 12 is EPA-approved

On Fiero.nl/, Pennolcks Fiero forum, Orge's cave it tells the reasons why substutes for R12 are bad. for one thing since it's a blend in time when you need to recharge and as its a blend you don't know what's in there. If it's straight R12 or 134a you know. I was told last summer when I had my 87 Prelude Si recharged that it was leaking out of the compressor front seal, the recharge lasted all summer but is gone now. I was thinking of getting a substute as there pretty cheap and letting it leak but there all higly flamable and leaking would be to dangerous. And as someone above said it's in your dash. True. I did the conversion (Which is an adapter nipple) and used "Arctic freeze"134A, which has a UV dye in it and a sealant. My system was dead when I got the car, no pressure, so that was good, the little kit came with a little black light flashlight so you can see where there are the leaks where the dye bleeds out. The were minor leaks leaks on the compressor hose fittings on the compressor body. The sealer worked great. Now I am a car builder (Custom Rods) and not a fan of additives,sealers etc. This is a driver that I bought and is a perfect car that is very simple. And this stuff worked great. Been a year and you can freeze a chicken in the car on the lowest setting. I got the stuff at Autozone, put in 40 psi and done. Check it after driving and add more if needed after the sealer takes care of minor leaks. As I said it is a driver in perfect shape so in this case it work out well.If you get it make sure it is the one with the UV dye. You can get the blacklight seperate also.

Go online, challenge the MVAC 609 test. $20. They'll send you your certificate. Buy R12 off ebay $15-25 per can.
