View Full Version : B20A freaky overheating

Almost shat my pants today after I had dropped off the kids at daycare and was on the way to work. As soon as I started it I noticed something was different, it revved up higher than usual. It went up to about 2.3k rpm when it usually is at 2-2.1k before settling down as it warms up. When I stopped at the first intersection it started revving up and down like crazy (been doing a bit of this before, but now it was pretty violent). I continued on my way, and right after I noticed the temp gauge was heading for the red zone alarmingly fast, so I pulled over and popped the hood. Checked the coolant and it wasn't hot at all, which seemed strange if it were overheating. Started thinking maybe the coolant doesn't flow but when I started the car I could feel it going through the hose. Continued my way to work, and didn't get any further problems.

So... What does this sound like? Is my thermostat giving up or what?

you answered your own question. unless it was really cold and your cooling system froze lol

Is the thermostat the same as the A20A?

I hope it'll hold together on my way home from work, gonna pick up a new thermostat on the way.

i'd pull it out. i would think it's better to run it colder than it should rather than risking it over heating & replacing a head gasket :) but that's just my unprofessional opinion

Can it be pulled out without any tools?

Well, a 10mm socket is all you need

Well didn't have one at work. Anyways, got home without any issues. Had the heater on max and kept the revs as low as I could. When I got home I hopped into the corolla and went to the parts store. Got thermostat and also picked up a timing light. Just got the thing installed and seems to me working fine. Think I might have gone a bit overboard with cleaning up the thermostat cap tho, I'll post up pics in a bit.

Sounds like you had an air bubble near the sensors.

I think that might have been it too, but guess replacing the thermostat isn't a bad idea anyway. Think I'm going to flush and bleed the coolant tomorrow.

And now it's shiny!
