i have a stock 89 lxi manual coupe with 250k miles on it and i want to work on it in my friends garage in order to do that i have to drive the car 500 miles is there some things i should check out before i make this trip to see if the car will make it safely? the only problem that i can tell it has is that it seems to drain the battery when the car is off so i can start the car by jumpstarting it and also it doesnt downshift unless i am drivin below a certain speed or below respectful to the gear its on but if u guys recomend something else i should check on or do before this trip that would be greatly appreciated

Check your oil and manual tranny fluid, then the coolant. Turn on the A/C switch on to see if both coolant fans come on.

Especially since you are in TX in this time of year.

on the batt it sounds like you might have a bad cell... might be time to replace the batt itself, autozone will do a free check for you on your batt and your chargeing system, check your axle boots aswell for tears and rips and clicking noises on corners

Shadetree check for battery.

1. Check battery voltage with multimeter 11.5 - 12.5 volts fully charged.

2. With multimeter attached to battery have someone start car. If voltage drops below 9.5 volts. You have a bad battery. Replace it.

3. With the car running you should have 13.75 + volts showing on your multimeter.

That Shaft that inserts into your brake/knuckle/hub assembly. Basically the brake rotor. Tha shaft has 2 boots on it. The one closest to the brake and the other side closest to the the tranny.
