It's been awhile since I've stopped in here to catch up on some good old times. A lot has changed, I'll have to catch up with everything tomorrow (it's getting late, work early).

Crazy to think it's been 4years since I've had my 3g :( I still miss that car!

I've still got my civic, last August i blew up the H22 and ended up doing a complete rebuild on the motor, its now fully built all motor setup. Hoping to see 235-250 WHP and shooting for low 13's on slicks. Also shaved the engine bay, and did a full wire tuck on it. Did away with the heater core/blower motor, etc.

Heres a couple pics of it as it sits, mostly finished up. Still needs a few dress up/finishing touches, but it's ready to drive/tune as it sits.

could the intake be a lil bigger that cant be good for power

Should of given info on the motor i guess.

h23/vtec
h22 type s pistons (12.1:1 CR factory, in the h23 block it will net me nearly 13.0:1 CR)
fully built head consisting of:
P&P, milled 10 thousandths, Dual springs, retainers, oversized valves, crower stage 3 cams (half an inch of lift on these cams, hence, the intake) skunk 2 cam gears, etc.
Custom intake manifold, double stacked, ported/polished to hell, 70mm TB opening, 76mm TB
DSM 440 injectors, walbro 255lhp (the high output version), hondata s300, and will be tuning on E85 opposed to traditional gas

So needless to say, its a 4" intake to a 3" TB, at altitude i need to be bringing in all of the air i can get. Especially since I know i'll be able to get plenty of fuel through it. The piping will likely have to be extended, or cropped dependent on dyno numbers. Essentially just to see where I'm getting the smallest amount of turbulence, and the best air flow through the intake.

hey....i remember you back in the day....your civic looks sick.....sweet motor....tune the shit out of it so it will last. how is the truck?

It's getting a good tune, but not expecting it to last more than a couple seasons really.

The truck has made some huge changes... well... i guess which one?

I had this one for a bit:
http://users.4x4wh.com/4x4master/yota/10-14-07/5.jpg

Which then got in a hit/run, bent frame rails. Insurance paid me more for it than what i bought it for, so i let them total it.

Bought this (day of purchase):
00 tacoma, 4cyl, 5spd
http://users.4x4wh.com/4x4master/yota/Taco/1.jpg
http://users.4x4wh.com/4x4master/yota/Taco/2.jpg

Then it went through a few phases, heres the last pic before i got bored with it:
http://users.4x4wh.com/4x4master/yota/1-17-09/5.jpg

Basically from purchase up until that pic i shortened up the bed 12" in the rear, 6" out of the frame (better departure angle), new/bigger tires, gears/lockers, body protection, etc.

Then i got a killer deal on a totaled 02 ext. cab with the 3.4 v6 through my work (body shop, still) and did this:
http://users.4x4wh.com/4x4master/yota/3.4-cabswap/5.jpg

:ugh: whered it all go?

http://users.4x4wh.com/4x4master/yota/3.4-cabswap/EX1.jpg
mmmm more head room/cab space

http://users.4x4wh.com/4x4master/yota/3.4-cabswap/EN2.jpg
mmmm more power

As it sits now:
http://users.4x4wh.com/4x4master/yota/Moab%2009/AZQ.jpg
http://users.4x4wh.com/4x4master/yota/Moab%2009/AZR.jpg

Got lazy, gotta finish body work on the bed/tail gate and paint it. Then tub the cab to clear bigger tires and paint the cab corners.

Theres a TON of pics of progress through each step here, starting with the red truck up to now:

It's not TOO bad though. It's relatively streetable.

Got the car street tuned tonight, and my oh my does it pull.

My tuner has an all motor k24 integra that runs consistent 12.8/12.9 up here and says he fully expects to see the same from my car just based on the fuel curves in hondata, and how well it pulls.

Still have a few small bugs to get figured out, but everythings going smooth!

Motor/head was built at a shop in ohio, then i bought it from a local.

FINAL verdict after assessing the damage with a couple people is the wrist pin was not properly installed/specd when the type s pistons were installed on these rods. It created a weak link in the piston, and the piston let go of the rod.

new motors going together :)

h22 block with h23 95mm crank
h22 arias dome pistons (12.1:1) 88mm
GRP aluminum rods
Sleeved/bored/stroked h22 more or less

FULL race head
Supertech .5mm oversized valves
Supertech dual springs & retainers
Supertech bronze valve guides (shaved)
5 angle valve job, LOTS of port & polishing
quench/combustion chamber reliefs welded
head milled
custom intake manifold

When it's all said and done, it should be about 13.8:1 comp at THIS altitude (1 mile above sea level), maybe a little more. It would be approx. 15.1-15.5:1 at sea level.

Motor will be together, in the car running, before august is over.

halxi
08-20-2009, 10:09 PM
Indeed the h23 crank/rods is essentially a cheap way to stroke an h22. However, I'm running h22 pistons, instead of h23 pistons. The overall piston height is slightly taller on the h22 (like .045" IIRC) so they'll be poking out of the top of the block (thus bumping my compression even more ;) )

I can't say as I remember you because I was on a few year um..family starting stint when you were active. ...but, much respect for that H build and I'm loving that rock crawler you're building there too. So you have a showroom quality finish on the repaint on a rockcrawler with sliders on it? How long before you skyjack it on 40's and put an exoskelaton on it? I love that shitsh, and with I could do that with my 86.5 hardbody (short bed, reg cab, V6, stick, 4x4), but that's not a cheap hobby, and we don't have any good quarry's or rock/mud runs around here.

The armor that's on it is all tucked up nice, but serves its purpose quite well. Personally, i hate the look of armor/exo's, etc. They just look tacky to me, and in the end is just more junk hanging off the truck to get caught up on lol. I plan to solid axle it, but it'll only see 37's at most. Anything bigger than that in Colorado is kind of useless, since there are really only 3-5 trails where you would NEED a tire that big.

After this motor blew up, i thought long and hard about a J swap, or a eagle/vitara single cam. But, i started this project to build a fast all motor car at altitude that is NOT a K (personally, i hate about 95% of the douche bags on the K series bandwagon) just to prove that it CAN be done for fairly cheap. Including my already 1 blown up 'built' motor, I'm still in it for less than what a K swap would cost, and I'll be running circles around the average K swap.

Did you SAS the pickup? I got lucky enough to get an 83 shortbox Hilux with the factory solid axle, and even luckier to score a fixable frame for $100 CDN.

No solid axle, yet. It will come in time, but right now I cant afford to go full on, balls deep into two hobbies. So I do a little here, a little there, on both of them when i can. Still only 20yrs old with other bills/priorities to take care of. Realistically i need to just get rid of the honda but i can't bring myself to do it lol.

I love those old hard bodies, 86.5 last model they did with the spare still mounted IN the bed behind the driver window. My dad used to have one, i miss the hell out of that truck.

Anyways, car's done, tuned (but still needs more) and has been to the truck.

Verdict; it needs bigger cams. BAD.

It's trying to breathe but just running out up top. However, it has a wicked power band (only 3wtq difference from 4600-8000rpm) that sits nearly flat through the whole top end @ 156wtq.

Made out with 226whp on a fresh motor, still working on seating rings, then will come bigger cams and a few other little touches that will help get power. This motor will most definitely see 250 at altitude.

Heres a current pic (sorry, cell phone) of the bay re-touched since i had to get breathers welded into a different valve cover. I ended up mixing a 100% 1 off color to paint it with, and liked it so much i re-did the intake as well. Ignore the grounds, they're temporary. And YES they actually made a difference on the dyno! (4whp) Since the distributor and injectors are the only two components that send a signal BACK to the ECU, you want that signal sent back with MINIMAL distortion.

http://users.4x4wh.com/4x4master/Honda%20Pics/newvc.jpg

Here's the chart.

Green Baseline (old tune, original power with the built motor), vs Red where it left off at today

http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/8476/dyno1.jpg

240whp, and 171wtq. gained 30whp and 30wtq @ 5200rpm over my previous tune.

There is still more in it as well, after 4 hours on the dyno we were all exhausted and beat. So we're going to go back to the drawing board and see what we can do to get 250whp, then back to the dyno in another month or so.
