View Full Version : B20A Valve Adjust Problem (I may be retarded)

Does anybody know any tricks to getting the feeler gauge between the rocker and the top of the valve? I tried the smallest feelers possible, and can't get the damn thing in there. I even adjusted the rockers loose and still can't get the feelers in there.

Is it possible that the valve has just worn into the rocker so that there's a divot in it, and it's sunken down over the valve? Or am i just crazy?

I've adjusted valves on K-series, ES, A-series and D series motors without any problem... So I sorta know what I'm doing...

That's strange, I didn't really have any problems with getting my gauge in there when I did mine. And I've never adjusted any valves before. Did you try it from every angle? I bent my feelers a bit so it was easier to get it square with the rocker and valve.

Maybe you didn't have the right cylinder at TDC? Wouldn't think you'd make a mistake like that tho.

Never had any problem either.

I'm going to check this on my spare B20A tonight, the valve cover isn't bolted on so it's a matter of seconds.

P.S Yes, I'm bragging about my spare B20A. Would it be too much if I mentionned it's manual too :p

All B20's around here are manual, in fact I don't think they ever came with autos in Europe.

Yeah I've never had problems getting the feeler gauges in there either on any other motor, so only thing I can figure is that they're worn pretty badly. Which would stand to reason, since there's wear on the cam lobes and the whole inside of the engine is coated in black old burnt oil...

I re-read your original message and came to this conclusion:

You're doing it wrong :D

You have to put the feeler gauge between the cam lobe and the rocker, not the rocker and the valve like you did on the A20A.

Just do it that way and it will work.

Really? I know the clearances should technically be the same, but isn't there some geometric reason why it might not come out the same? Well I guess I can give it a shot. Might go to the wreckers this weekend and dissect a B20A5 and see how that shit goes together. Seems too easy to use the camshaft... but can't hurt to try it's already noisy as a can of marbles... :D Thanks Carotman.

Now that I think of it, that's how I did mine too.

OK well that's like 5 or 6 people with B20A engines that have all done it that way... Including Aaron and Alex... :D Thanks.

Well fuck me in the goat-ass! I looked in the 3g Prelude manual, and the page looks nearly identical. I don't remember seeing that illustration of the feeler gauge though. I wasn't really paying attention to the illustration there though. I just didn't read in the writing where it says where to put the feeler gauge. Thanks, I guess we got that solved then. :)

Well shit it did have that illustration in the 3g Prelude manual... Guess I just never looked close enough. This is the page I had printed out, sitting on my windshield while I was trying to do this...

Yeah I know. :( I don't know why I went into the 3g Prelude manual... Either way, wouldn't have mattered...
