After I shut the car off the brake lights remain on. I recently had the car painted and I removed the tail lights. After I installed and reconnected them and drove the car home, I did a walk around and noticed the lights were on. I jiggled some wires, disconnected them and reconnected and the same thing happened. What the hell could it be?? I swear this frickin car has gremlins...

There is a switch just above the brake pedal, it has a plunger that shuts the brake lights off when the pedal reaches the top of it's travel.

Try slapping the shit outta that switch, it's probably stuck.

There's that.

...or you could just adjust it...

it doesn't exactly mean the switch is bad, it could be what hits the switch, make sure that the plastic nubs on the pedal are contacting the switch (mine fell off so i had to make new ones) otherwise you could just try replacing your stoplight switch

same thing happened to my 2gee the little plastic nubs broke off and the plunger was going through the hole in the pedal and the lights would stay on.

You can buy another rubber button, or just use a 1/4" bolt to take its place. It's a simple fix. It's no ones fault the old one just disentegrated and fell out.

I'll give it a try first thing in the morning. I will try to adjust it and if that doesnt work I'll just slap the shit out of it! Whatever "it" is. Thanks for the super fast responses fellas. I am almost finished with my hatch and I will start a build thread as I get closer. I have a ton of pictures to share. I was incognito for a minute while the car was under construction. Plus all the OT I was working didnt allow me time to work on it either...

Is the stop plunger button in place on the brake pedal?

When I finally climbed under the dash and realized that there was a switch on the set screw I said to myself "you dumb ass". Well thanks again fellas--another easy fix from the "dudes wif spernce".

When my light came on my brake lights went out--
