Well I guess its time that I post some pictures of the work that I have been doing on my beloved hatch. Im having a great deal of fun rebuilding this old friend of mine. For those that dont know I had this same car 20 years ago and I have rebuilt another to look just like it. I'll be posting pictures periodically so keep your eyes open;) Oh and by the way, dont get to happy about seeing mods cuz you wont see much. Im oLeSkoOl and Im not big on the rice, just pure plain and simple...The first set of pictures are of the car 20 years ago exactly as it was in 1990 and the others are of the piece of junk I found on the side of the road for 500 bucks in 2007. Hang with me theres more to come.

This is the day we moved from Arizona to Georgia in September of 1990

This pic is the day I picked it up from the shop after getting it lowered and the wheels put on in December 1989

you know Pete, you may call that $700 cat a piece of junk, but up here I'd be all over it for the $700. It looks completely rust free and read to straighten out that passenger side corner, then get to all the work you've already started.

So how 'bout some pics of those top secret mods you ARE working on?

It doesnt look close to that anymore...the last time I checked it out it looked fine to me. :) And that was quite a few months ago.

Patience Grasshopper . Now you know Im not really moddin' much, just the suspension mainly and eventually the interior. But right now all I have done are the GC coilovers and tokico blue struts, which I absolutely hate; I'll be swapping them out for K-sports shortly, Vigor sway bar, louvers, a couple sets of wheels and tires; my ol'skool DP's and some Enkei SC-05's and well thats about it really, oh yeah, and I shaved all the emblems. The car has come a long way in 2 years, I have replaced just about everything that was held on with nuts, bolts or screws. I will post more pics tonight. If I had to guess I am about 80-85% complete. Im going to seek out the assistance of Luke (Mushroom Toy) and Tim (T-Durr) as I get closer to completion for their 3G prowess...

Heres a few more of the car once I got it home and started going through it. I needed to determine where in the hell to start the project. Honestly I had no earthly idea. I bought a haynes manual and a shop manual and went to work. Well I ran into a couple snags so I reached out to the net in hopes of finding a blog on a rebuild of a 3G and found you guys. I had the car at home for about 2 weeks before me and 3GEEZ hooked up. Contrary to popular belief The car did have a bit of rust that I had to address immediately. It was in the common areas for hatches; right side aft end of the hatch itself, behind the right tail light too and the bumper reinforcement was simply ate up. There was also a bit under the doors rubber seals

if you need any interior peieces let me know Im trying to get rid of the red interior i pulled from my white hatch. I do like the white bumpers on your car vs the black on most. I was going to go all black lower until the last pic there. Why do you hate the upper control arm setup

The camber adjustment is great but the GC's and the blues dont work well together, you know spring rate and all that good stuff. It just bounces like shit and Im afraid its just gonna push me off the road one day...

I have no idea what the tire size is other than they're 14's but if you really want to know ask T-Durr. Its what he has on his car now, I traded them for a torque wrench :sad2:

I’m not much of a gearhead but I love to tear shit apart, fix it, clean it, and put it all back together again. With that said, I have had the entire car apart. I pulled down the interior and replaced the dash, the seats, the head liner, door panels, center console, added the tape case, carpet from a coupe and a really good carpet from the hatch area that looks barely used. While I had it all apart, I scrubbed the shit out of it to remove all the abuse the car had seen in 21 years. Cigarette smoke residue was the worst. You know that little dump (flapper) valve on the inside behind the L/H panels in the hatch compartment? Well it was completely covered in tar. Almost like a cosmoleen or AV-30; the sprayed on protectant stuff. I caught hell getting it off. Then there were the cigarette ashes ground in to the floor pan, and 2 decades worth of spilled drinks and food. I had to suit up for like a BIO/Hazmat operation just to remove the carpet. I was able to clean everything and disinfect obviously and then put her all back together. While I had the rear passenger interior panels out, I recovered them with that striped material. Kind of manly lookin’ not too ostentatious.

First thing I removed was the dash

Here’s a pic or two I took under the cherry tree...The goal was to rebuild it the way it was, like my signature pic. I think I’m there... So I ask, "Now that I have reached my goal what should I do next???" The stuff I’m working on is: rebuilding a motor and trans, teg headrests, teg front lip, roof rack, sunroof (the one in the car currently is junk) maybe a sliding ragtop, KSports (still sitting in the box). Im gonna do a "GreatDane" hood mod if that’s alright with you buddy and projector headlights. That’s got to be the cleanest damn thing I’ve seen done to any of our whips.

Ok-- Pico, Geddy, TDurr, RooDoo, Rendon, CAH, Mark (I’m still working on the interior) and Grand Duke Luke don’t hold back, I don’t care how crazy it sounds…My car just needs something else!

Pete, that damn thing looks so clean and so nice.

The louvers look great on it. The wheel $ tire combo is nothing but right. The drop is perfect. That lip will really tighten up the look of the front end so get to work dammit.

Just a few things to ask....

Where's the damn interior pics? Do you have rear disc yet?

Critique:
I'm not a huge fan of the graphic, but that's a matter of personal preference. Are the horn covers painted black or just not there? I would really love to see what a slightly (not too much) tinted front signal light would look like on your car. Again, still see the orange, but just a slight tint to it (much like the edm/jdm ones). Then again, the half&half's would look REALLY good too (imo).

In Summary:
The only thing I think that car really needs... ...a new friggin owner. (ME)

Mark Foose in da house!! You catch all the subtleties huh? lol.
No interior or disk brakes yet. I cant seem to make up my mind on the material. Hey, I feel you on the graphic, Im not the biggest fan of it either. I have to try things out to know for sure, but until I do, it eats at me like a virus.
I tried tinting the turn signals and it didnt come out too great so I got another pair. maybe I'll try again in the future.
I got rid of aftermarket louvers and found true Honda louvers; these have a better profile.
Horn covers?? What the heck are they besides the obvious?

Im going to pay someone to put the trans in but I do need somehelp with the coilovers. Maybe next Saturday if youre down?

Bright and early, and if so, I'll reserve the bay at the shop.

Thanks dude! Im rebuilding an A20 and I want to boost it. Everyone tells me to go with a B20 (which I love) but I really think its cool to see an 86-89 with a built SOHC motor. Guaynabo has the right set up on his.

One of the other things I would like to do is add some smooth looking rocker panels like on the VW jettas or passats. Even Volvo has some good looking parts and pieces that can be added to our cars. My ride is a work in progress. I started on this thing over two years ago and Ive only put, maybe, 500 miles on it total. Even TDurr and Mushroom Toy were like "Come on already!"

bbq in June, of course..

I was going to ask about those signal lights, they look freakishly too orange in the picture, what is that?

I love all the motors in these cars, I really like the A20 and squeezing its potential. Or just having one set up properly and running right. It is amazing at the number of these cars that were and are running around all out of adjustment.. many of them wind up in the JY because of it.

I only wound up with a B20 by fluke circumstance, motor was advertised here, it was in Atlanta, it was cheap I just happened to have resources to get it... I only wish I had a few extra head gaskets and I wouldnt be so nervous about it. Oh and an extra tranny, preferably a manual.

Ok I guess I got some work to do on those signal lights. Now that its been mentioned for the umpteenth time, now Im looking at them and saying out loud, " Yeah, what about them big Mike & Ike lookin' turn signals?" I never really paid much attention to them before--They have kind of a kit car feel to them huh? Time to break out the spray tint... That will be one of my weekend chores coming up.

Im going to start tearing the motor down next weekend if Im lucky.

no pics of the k-sports

I havent put them on the car yet. They're just chillin' in the back of the hatch. Im motivated to buy different shit but I dont have the time to work on anything. Thats why I cant put any miles on the car--Im too busy working--but dont get me wrong, Im not complaining about the, "thank God I have a job" part...

Me and TDurr picked up a set of Se-i rear brake assys last night and I didnt know the prop valve had to be changed to a 4040. I stumbled on the car as I was leaving the yard. I was pretty amazed to see the rear end was still intact. Well I got the entire brake, e-brake and trailing arm assy with all of the brackets. The only bad thing for me is, that jive turkey Tim grabbed the prop valve for his car :321: LMAO---its all good (I got to give you some shit atleast) and thanks for your help yesterday little brotha, I couldnt have done it w/out cha!

So, Im left perplexed with a load of questions :confused:;

Is there another car I can pull a prop valve from like a lude, teg or CB7? Can my stock valve be drilled? Should I go back and get the ECU from the Se-i, is there anything significant about it from the Lx-i? The Se-i was a sedan so will the e-brake cables be too long or maybe too short for my hatch?

Just so you know I gave the center console (armrest) to Mushroom Toy and the cup holder was already snatched :rly:

Hey Tim, before you toss your old valve maybe we can clean it if you think its clogged. Brake cleaner and compressed air go a long way.

I wouldn't try to clean it, it's a sliding valve, once it corrodes it's finished, if it sticks again under hard braking, the car may do something weird as far as handling or sliding. they don't clog, brake fluid attracts water, (hydroscopic) and the water corrodes the inside of those parts. under emergency braking, it limits the pressure to the back wheels temporarily, this stops the back from locking up first and the car coming around ass first.

No doubt.

Well I went back to the yard to do some homework and made some interesting discoveries. You may already know this but it seems to be a toss up as to what cars use the 40/40 prop valve. I looked at an '88 teg and saw that its valve looks just like ours so I pulled it out figuring with disc brakes its got to be a 40/40. Well I walked the valve down the aisle to an '89 Honda Accord LX coupe to compare the two. I thought well they look exactly the same. Close examination revealed something I wasnt expecting. To my amazement the valve in my hand from the teg was a 35/40. The valve in the coupe (with drums mind you) was a 40/40. If there is a good explanation out there I am dying to hear it. This little discovery just took everything I thought to be true and threw it out the window...

The valve on the right is the teg 35/40 (disc all around) and the one on the left is a 3geez 40/40 (disc/drum combo)

I am going to take the teg valve to work and cut it open to find out once and for all whats inside. Im figuring its completely static or it has a spring type mechanism. We will see...

you might want to try the 35/40 i'm assuming the 35 is for the rear, the hatchbacks tend to be light in the back, so you want a little bit less brake in the back end

isn't the 35/40 what the stock one is? anyway, the drum brakes get more fluid going to them than the disc brakes do, so using the 35/40 (which i assume is the stock one) is what causes your rear brakes to lock up. this happened to me when i used a drum/disc prop valve on a car with front & rear disc brakes.. the 40/40 is the correct one to use. this is just speaking from experience, someone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong :)

the drums are always limited by the valve, this prevents them from locking up before the front brakes, since the rear of the car is lighter the rear end could come around if the backs locked first.

Funny you ask. I have a bad habit of not being patient. I bought a set of aftermarket louvers for my car thinking I would never find an OEM set and WALLA! a 1986 DX w/ louvers pops up on craigslist. I called and offered $75 for the louvers and she said come and get it. I actually pulled a 40/40 prop valve off an 89 LX-i. I also grabbed a 35/40 off a 1990 teg. So youre saying go with the 35/40??

That's odd, I've heard the 4040 prop valve only comes off the SE-i Accords (4 wheel disc). My 4 wheel disc Accords came stock with the 35/40 valve, maybe cause my cars have different front brakes??? The LX-i you got your prop valve from must have had that swapped in at some stage. Either way, I don't think you'll run into any issues with the rear brakes locking up using either 3540 or 4040 prop valves. lol sorry for the confusion

American muscle cars have had louvers for a while. Especially from the late late 60's, really popular in the 70's and started dying off in trend in the late 80's. All car trends like most anything come full circle. The cars are looking more retro these days so it only makes since to bring back the retro trends. I say we should contract a machine shop and place a batch order for some curb feelers. I bet the young dudes have never heard of those...LOL

Anyway, I dont think its a trend started here in the states. I will bet it was started in Japan and later adopted here. If you take a good long look at louvers you will see that the person who came up with the idea was taking a serious financial risk. What looks good on paper doesnt always look good in person. Well, I dig them so thats all that really matters...

Hey Pete if you want to ride down my way well put the coilovers on no prob. Ive just got a floor jack and jackstands but then it would only take us an hour or two tops. Might as well swap the new tranny in while your at it...that wouldnt take that long either. But if you seriously want to get the coilovers done come down here and Ill help you.

My car is sitting on jack stands with the rear end torn out. Im getting ready to put in the disc brakes but hit a stand still with the coilovers. Oh well, this is how it goes most of the time...But thanks for the offer.

What problem are you having with the coilovers?

Well I think I have it figured out. My dumb ass just needed to pull out the upper mount assembly :toilet:. And I F'ed up a ball joint on the upper control arm. Im going to take some pics and get them posted as I install them.

Its really hard to concentrate with two little ones running around and asking me questions.

The quality is 'just OK' but the fit and fair was decent. The two things I didnt like were that the louvers sag in the middle and they were a little bit tall. I should have some pictures somewhere. Do a search for louvers and Im sure you will find them.

damn pete, your progress is almost slowing to the pace of mine.. hehehe :stick:

As far as wheels go, I'm still partial to the DP's. The split-spokes do look good too, but it's really a matter of personal preference.

I wish I could just come down there and do the interior for you. Are you putting on adjustable rear upper control arms when you do the k-sports?

Yeah I know. My flipping job keeps me pretty damn busy. I put my car on stands a month ago to start the brake swap and thats as far as I got. And yeah I already have the adjustable upper control arms on it. Man, I have so much shit in my garage to put on this car, I just cant seem to find the time....And then theres TDurr :banghead: LOL

OK, it only took me 6 months to get the Ksports and the rear discs on the car. Gotta thank TDurr for that though. That dude really came through. He assembled the rear end on both sides including the coilovers, changed the prop. valve and bled all for corners. But now the car wont start, go figure!

Where in the hell do I find seat belts? Brand new stock 1988 or 89 ones.

I took the car up to Weaver in Marietta and had them adjust the ride height. They lowered the rear more to 23 and a half inches and the front to 23. They did a full alignment and a high speed balance. Drove like a dream machine. I'm gonna try and upload some pics

if yours are going bad, they are lifetime warranty, i wonder if the later cars have the same non automatic seat belt mounting points as the early cars? if they do you can do away with the automatic belts and go with the basic trouble free belts

King Peetis

Is there another year of seat belt that will work on an 1988? I need belts for me the wife and the kids. I would feel much better and safer knowing my kids are protected.
