Well I got me a set of rare RH-Alurad wheels, those are made in germany in late 80's for german cars. Those are 15x7. I like style they are made in, 80's rimp for 80's car with a lip and perfect offset, what cud be better? I stumbled on those by accident and just have to have those, but they were in bad shape as you see on pics below.
How I got them

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Tomisimo/My%20Honda/Bilde003-6.jpg
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Tomisimo/My%20Honda/Bilde004-6.jpg
Wheels had to much oxidation, even under powder coat, I cleaned all out with a brush and sand paper.. there is still places where old coat of paint is on but its good it sits well so I leaved it as is.
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Tomisimo/My%20Honda/Bilde000-4.jpg

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Tomisimo/My%20Honda/Bilde002-5.jpg
Then I machined the lip. I had to do this, because oxidation ate true maybe a half of a millimeter and leaved a crater, there is no way you get it smooth with out taking a layer off..

There is one that I need to redo abit.. milling bit engrave it self because of vibration, I do that tomorrow..

More to come tomorrow :D I will be finishing last one and paint them.

Oo, nice :D
They look pretty similar to mine, so I like them ;)

what's the offset?

Tomisimo
10-27-2009, 07:32 AM
ET38.. :) I'll be making a thin spacer for rear, to offset it by et4, so they look even with the wheel arch.. And I can correct before inspection by taking it out.
Those will be my winter tires :D

wow never actually seen anyone remill a rim before. I was going to recomend a bead blasting cabinet but not to use sand but a softer substrate. That is definatly a better way as long as its not too time consuming. Can you get the the inside lip reveal as well so it looks new behind the design? Nice find and I really like them.

Well, I was looking in to that, usually you need Glass Blasting for rimps or risk having millions of small dents in the aluminum.. But the Glass you use in sandblaster is quiet expensive.. 50$ for 8kilo bag, overhere at least. And yes, I had to mill that lip, as I had deep craters in it, there is no way you can polish those, I'll take detailed pick tomorrow of last one, just to show how serious it is.. So this is the best way.. And that is time consuming work indeed, but hey, at least I work for my shit lol..
And yes I can but it is time consuming work, and polishing it is a bitch by hand, I need to use sandpaper by hand to get that nice finish.. I was just thinking to get it smooth and repaint it black.. its not a show car rimps, all brake dust will always show..

Well I see no point to have my car looking like ass in winter, I think the car deserve to look good even with winter tires. I have steelies now, its ugly. looks like old beater..

not to use sand but a softer substrate. so true
sandblasting almost ruined my (supposed to be) summer rims today. i hope that some wetsanding will get em back to life but the center caps are all warped due to overheat. hope they ll still look good enough without the caps

Sweet, nice work and nice rims! They will end up being pretty hot by the looks of it. I guess they were pretty straight then eh? Otherwise you would end up with a mess when you started turning them lol. Impressive they are still straight considering the age of those actually. I think my first set of rims were RH rims now that I think about it.

Yea, they were surprisingly straight indeed, well I think that they laid around for good time, as there was 20yr old tires on those.they had tires marked 89.01 lol.. And I think they will look nice if I manage to paint them nicely :)

Don't forget to clear the entire wheel for corrosion protection.

smooth as a baby's butt ! Did you consider any other colors for the center part than black? I think it would look great if you had something to break away a little from all the black on the car.

Hahaha me too.

Winter isn't that bad if they don't pour salt all over the roads. Actually, the cold weather would even slow down the rust process.

ok folks I was thinking here about Dane's suggestion, What other colors you think I can use for my black car? Please post pics, so I can see and deside.. I'm agreed with Marthin about that it would look plain..

Carot, you think I was busting my ass and burned my nails to leave that lip uncleared? I know it will oxidize in few weeks and all that work will go to waste, So I bout clear coat.

I agree with 88LXi68 about not believing, I have just the same thought in my head, but I have other plans for summer tires.. Dont gona tell what is, only time will tell :D

Looking real good, I'd probably go with gold or bronze for the color on those, or silver if you prefer it more subtle. Can't really think of any other color that wuld look that nice with the black.

Why do you want spacers on the rears? I'd think that would make them go further out than the edge of the fender. Mine are the same size as yours and ET 35, and they're about a millimeter or two wider than the fender. Which makes me think that ET 38 should be pretty much perfect without spacers, put 4mm spacers on and they'll stick out 2-3mm from the wheel arch.

Tomisimo
10-28-2009, 02:49 PM
IDK, I was thinking Bronze color, but somthing keep me from duing that.. I think it will look rised up.. White, its not a rally car, and besides they will get dirty fast. Silver is just everywhere.. Gunmetal, maybe, but I cant find gunmetal color in a spray box..

Here is what they would look like if they were new.. My are original black tho
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Tomisimo/My%20Honda/hammer_price_jp_3300-img600x398--1.jpg

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Tomisimo/My%20Honda/hammer_price_jp_3300-img600x384-124.jpg

edit: Well original wheels are et38 on our cars and they go under rear wheel arch, once I had wheels that were et42 from a civic, and I loved how they stick out abit

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Tomisimo/My%20Honda/03092006013.jpg
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Tomisimo/My%20Honda/03092006014.jpg
And I will modify rear arches when I will weld new body pannels, I want to widen it in the rear, like front fenders do. So it will look ground planted and more massive, you get that illusion. I can always take spacers out before that mood.

I'm pretty much with Naf's. And i would also suggest gunmetal. In my opinion a black center would sort of make the center disappear. Gunmetal is still subtle like black but it becomes a bit more visible.

Oh and you dont have to look for "gunmetal" on the cans of paint, just find the color that has that grey/black color.

Our stock wheels are not 7" wide, which means they'll sit way different with the same ET number. I bet those civic wheels are pretty narrow too.

Also, I think you got it backwards... Bigger ET means the wheel is further in, and smaller ET means it sticks out more. You can't compare the ET of different size rims directly, as the number is the offset of the mounting point compared to the center of the rim.

With that said, ET38 should be pretty close to perfect with a 7" wide wheel. Should sit about flush with the wheel arch, and if you want the rears to stick out just a bit then the 4mm spacer would indeed do that.

Good luck with the painting :)

Here is todays Update..
before primer
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Tomisimo/My%20Honda/Bilde000-7.jpg
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Tomisimo/My%20Honda/Bilde001-8.jpg
I got first 2 layers of primer on, it filled all small scratches and gaps, nasty really.
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Tomisimo/My%20Honda/Bilde005-9.jpg
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Tomisimo/My%20Honda/Bilde004-8.jpg
Then I sanded down center caps and primer those as well, dont have pick of them tho in primer.. take that tomorrow.
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Tomisimo/My%20Honda/Bilde002-8.jpg
And then the hardest part begun, to wet sand with P400 gring paper, all 12 spokes = 36 sides x 4 wheels = 144 sides.. I even sanded down my nameless finger to the blood. Alot of sweat and blod went in these wheels, no tears yet tho lol..
Anyhow, here are the pics
all wet sanded, smooooth

The machining really made me want to restore one of the se-i wheels set I have here (I got 2 nasty sets).

Do they need to spin fast?

Hell go with white! :) And you gotta love sanding till your fingers go numb! mmmmmmmhh, numb...

By the way, Naf's is right I think you've got the ET stuff backwards! But I think you will be alright. I used to run a set of 15x7" ATS rims that were ET25 and they only had minor rubbing.

hehehe.. yea, milling really make wonders to old stuff..

and NO, you need like 80rpm speed on the mill, because Aluminum is very soft metal, you can easy eat to deep, or make some nasty holes
you can see on that pic, what 120RPM did
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Tomisimo/My%20Honda/Bilde006-6.jpg
Milling bit engrave itself. and you need to hold your hand on the wheel to cancel bell vibrations, as its resonate to much and because of that you get dents. use P150 sandpaper to smoothen surface after milling, recommend to use oil on P150 paper, it grind 10times faster and dont beat up your fingers holding that paper bit, and when its smooth you can go to finer stuff, I really recommend to use steelwool cloth, you can get it in different grind finishes, I used P450 first, than 1500, and to finnish P2500 cloth.
edit: forgot, when you at polishing stage, you can use any speed you like to polish, the faster the better..

Marthin, I like white, dont take me wrong, but I just dont like the idea of having brake dust show all the time, I'm gona be crazy cleaning it, as I'm a freak when it comes to keep everything clean.

I found that theese wheels are et37, not 38.. It stands on the back side of them.. I'll gona make spacers, and try with and without.. About your et25 wheels, those were from BMW e30 right?, I know a guy here that used to have buckets from a E30, he said he rubbed in the back.

I have a surprise tho, I bout a effect paint to overlap the black.. We'll see tomorrow, I'm exited to see the result.. Hope it turns out nice and will complement my car.

10-30-2009, 06:57 AM

Sometime next week I'll be getting new tires and then I install them on the car..

oldschoolhatch
10-30-2009, 09:17 AM
i like the gold flake in there. when the lighting hits it right its gonna look awesome. it will be nice on a black car becuase the rims will look mostly black to match, but under certain lighting the gold will show and it will add some neat color to the rims. congrats on doing a really good job, and also for choosing a paint scheme thats not too common.

p.s
this may be a noobish or already explained question, but at what point did you apply the gold effect paint? i was originally gonna paint my rims solid green, but my car is black as well, so the black with heavy green flake in it might look neater.

Tomisimo
10-30-2009, 09:57 AM
ok, you first Primer it, 2 coats, than going rough with P400 sand paper.. than apply 2-3 coats of paint, than on top of the paint apply effect.. (Try first on a small piece of aluminum, to see how much effect you like best, and train abit )
Then apply Clear coat.. So effect is the last thing before clear.

PS: Use clear based effect, to not overlap paintjob.

Thanks, That was the whole idea, those wheels will be like a jewelery to the car :D

Great. :) I've got those wheels on my Aero,
They were done same way, exept effect is a perl, so wheels and car have NH503P.
And Now I think I should work with mine during winter :)

Sanding down the lip without machine is a bit**
but there is a way to do it, jack up the front of a car, support with the stands, start engine hit 2nd gear... and there You go... sand paper in a hand, or some alu polish paste....
You can even grind them that way....

umm are you fucking joking? yeah lets put a wheel on a car and spin it with our hands near by... even better yet in the video lets do it with no gloves and wear jewelry like watches and wristbands... or lets use a sharp piece of metal to shave some layers off... yeah if it's "not actually" then you sir have never been to ANY safety training for anything have you?

I'm gonna have to agree that does seem like a bad idea. With the steering wheel not locked, it would suck for the wheel to move and snag your shirt and twist your arm off...

Lol, what a well done conclusion... I have actually.
But if you want to go ahead and think with your ass then anything will be potentially dangerous for you and I suggest you refrain from doing any mechanical work. Mounting the rim on the car to sand it is the same procedure as doing it on a lathe. Both are POTENTIALLY dangerous but if you have the slightest bit of common sense it's perfectly safe. Don't wear sleeves or wristbands or similar and make sure to work in the right direction in relation to the rotation and that the wheels dont turn. Obviously don't attempt to stick your hand or fingers through the spokes of rim... On a side note, sanding it on a lathe is potentially more dangerous than on the car because of your working position.

there is no dangerous work, its just stupid ppl do it wrong.. All I'm saying is think up ahead and think off all possible scenarios of what cud go wrong and you'll be ok.. This is how I do things anyway.. there is no excuse for stupidity tho..

hahahha... You'd like that ha? well I will get some tires eventually. What you can do is to find some wheels on your own and refurbish them :D
