Pulling Motor

What is the process for pulling one of these motors? What all needs to be unhooked and what order works the best. Pics would be great.

While the motor is out what would you replace?

I'll type the first part now so you can get to work.

Every time I pull an engine, I find a faster way to do it. I try to figure out how the factory did it and how the stealership would do it the fastest.

This motor can be pulled in an hour (probably less) at the Dealership, just keep that in mind.

Take the battery out so you can get in there easier. The alternator charge wire connects to the front of the top of the fuse box with a #3 phillips. Take that out with all the plastic holders that connect it to the body till you free it up to the engine harness. I don't know about the EFI, but I'm sure there are plugs in front of the tranny that can be disconnected. The battery cables come out with the engine, btw.

Take the radiator out... It's not hard. The fan is held in solid at the top, but the bottom bolts are slotted.

You need to pull the drivers side CV joint before you get into it too much. Just take the axle out and put the spindle back on the lower control arm so you can wheel it around the shop. You don't have to pull the passenger side if you are carefull and pull the motor and tranny out at an angle.

Don't forget the down-pipe SUPPORT rod. It's 2 12mm bolts that hold the down-pipe directly behind the motor. It's easy to get to from the top.

Don't forget the shift linkages... Hopefully you have a stick, cuz auto's are a big PITA to pull the shift cable, I'm sure.

That's all the tips I got... Disconnect the heater hoses on the engine side...

I wish, the car is sitting over in a heated shop waiting for me to get off work. It looks pretty easy to do, but I normally try to make it alot harder than it actually is... LOL

You should get rid of your emissions, acually! That will save you a big headache and you will see an improvement on power. This is your 87 Hatch LXI, right?? I don't think they have emissions up there, so you should get rid of them all.

Yes, so what is all included in the emissions? We talking 0-2 sensors, the CAT?? I didn't think there was too much on there? Thanks for the help!

Thanks guys, I am trying to just tilt the motor up for now to see if I can get to the freeze plug... It is close, but won't be able to get back to it till Monday. Ended up having to quite early last night. The heater went out and froze some pipes... so spent most of our time working on that...

Couldn't get that balancer/drive pulley off? Is that reverse threads?
