So the b20 does not have that oil seperater on the back like the a20 is that right.
mykwikcoupe
01-25-2010, 05:53 PM
yes it still has the black box on the back. The power from the b20a is dependant on the yr of manufacture. the gold tops are older and 160hp. the black tops are newer and 140.

I have both a blacktop and goldtop here.
They have the same internals.
I really doubt the Goldtop really makes 160 hp.

^^^ A guy on PreludePower just dyno'd his GoldTop B20A. Bone stock, 160,000km. Even stock air cleaner, exhaust, everything. 133whp. And that's running 11.5:1 AFR up in the top end. Which is pretty rich. Considering a conservative 15% drivetrain loss, that's ~157bhp. If he could get it to breathe a bit better in the top end, I bet it would make another 2-3hp.

ive noticed with all the motors swaps ive done the blacktops are slower than the gold tops but they are better on fuel. also ive noticed blacktops dont take the raping the gold tops do something has to be different. haha but thats from my experience with motors that are 200,000kms and older
try dyno a b20a with no alt, ps and AC belts hooked up to the pulley and run it on 98 (ish) octane fuel which is what they are supposed to run on in japan
i have a bellhousing that you can buy off me and use your a20 gear set to work on a b20a if you have a spare 400us lying around

That is cheap considering how rare they are so count yourself as being lucky. I have had some pretty high offers over the years to buy my spare tranny but i never sold it. It seems the past few years were stagnant as far as B20A's coming into the country but this place seems to be one of the few that are importing them these days.

I will be buying it at the end of the month, plans where to go LS/vtec but since somebody decided to rip people off I don't think I will be going that route-my A20 needs rings anyways

Yeah I do. I thought it was a real good buy. Could have bought the whole motor and all for 750.00 shiped. But being out of work the money just doesnt go thet far. If I were still working I would but both of them but oh well. I dont know what shape the trans is in but it is were anyway. One step closer to my swap.

I'm trying to drum up some more JDM stuff for y'all (well, me, especially..)
I just sent those guys a message:
"I am looking for a rare/obscure JDM transmission from a 3rd gen Honda Accord. The engine this tranny came with is the B18A, model years 1985 to 1989, I believe. The special feature of this transmission is the bellhousing, which allows those of us in the US and Canada to run the JDM B20A engine with the commonly available american A20 transmission. I am also on a car forum, and there is enough interest in this transmission that if you can provide them for a fair price, you will probably be able to sell several there.
Also of interest are the B20A engines and transmissions. I've seen a couple come across your website lately, and would like to know if you plan on importing any more? When money allows, I'm certainly interested in buying another.
Thanks,
-Mike"

Yeah somebody better get up on that. That price was a steal for that tranny and the fact that he sold it seperately as well. I still haven't got my blacktop (w/goldtop cams) dynoed yet. I think this will answer a lot of questions as well. I know one thing for sure its fells like its pushing over 140hp

Does the B18A have electric shift solenoids or is it all mechanical like the A20A?

I think we should employ the finish driving regulations. Id like that alot. Teach all these yankers how to drive in the rain. I ride my motorcycle back and forth 100 miles a day rain, shine or storm and these idiots cant figure out how to drive fast and control the cars when its wet. Damn californians!!!

Got the engine today! Looks damn clean, but the oil cap is bashed off and the power steering pulley is bent to shit. The distributor and cam position sensor behemoth look untouched, and there's literally no oxidation on the aluminum parts.
Haven't had a chance to take off the shrink wrap, I hope the dipstick tube is in good shape. The one on Aarons engine is buggered around completely and is gonna drive me nuts.
So yeah, PM me with offers for accessory drive shit that I'm not gonna use. Hell, the thing even came with an alternator.
