Get a new after market head unit, they are all amplified these days ( I have a Blaupunkt 45 watts x 4) Basically 45 watts to each 4 speakers. Then buy the wiring harness for the after market stereo ( Metra is sold anywhere, It is the most common brand, Fry's, Best Buy etc. You plug the new harness into the factory stereo harness on the car ( so no cutting of the factory wires). Then all the wires are color coded to match from the stereo wires to the new harness wires. Then wire accordingly. Very simple to do.
Here is the type of harness you are looking for.

My blaupunkt sounds fine with no amp. I did upgrade the 4 speakers and it sounds really good.

And the more I got to think about it I came across this.

And also the Bose system was only a 20 watts x 4 amp. The head unit was not amplified at all, like head units are now. So a new head unit you can get amplified more than the stock Bose system of back then. That just about covers it.
